aslam o alaikum wa rahmatuAllahi wa barakatuh,
this is based on a small teleconference of Nouman Ali khan, its not a word to word transcript, it basically notes i took on it, so it contains alot of what he said but also, what i summarized quickly.
to listen to the whle teleconference (high recommended) visit: http://madinatube.com/video/milestones-in-quranic-education-with-nouman-ali-khan/
b-ismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmi,
First thing you have to take care of is arabic language, developing a fluency in Arabic language. Reading fluency opens the door to other areas,
1st milestone - Reading Fluency.
In my opinion, the qaida norani, is a fantastic resource.
2nd milestone - Regular Quran memorization ( a very beneficial thread : http://www.turntoislam.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76684)
To develop memorization is key, you really want be studying the quran that you have memorized. With memorization comes basic quran recitation, tajweed,
Know at least enough tajweed that you are not making fundamental mistakes
Memorize half a page a week, which may sound intimating to some of you, but its very manageable.
Half a passage, half a page a week, its barely even a ayah a day.
Its the mechanical aspects of building your relationship with the quran.
If you are really looking to be close to the book, then you have to be genuinely close to it.
3rd Understanding quran
Dividing it in two levels, understanding the quran without knowing the arabic, take advantage of the written, audio, video material, go through the entire quran. That’s what I call the quran cover to cover Project.
Go through the quran even though you haven't studied the arabic language.
While you are doing that get your feet wet with Arabic language, a very easy way to do that is to do very little Arabic every day.
My philosophy is do atleast 15-20 min the most, on your own schedule just a little bit of study that will help you build up quranic arabic.
If you have the opportunity and resource, build even a little bit of arabic at a time, you will notice more and more things.
If you are looking for quran study, you don’t want to waste your time studying conversational arabic, so you wanna focus on quranic arabic specifically (in the beginning) .
4th Study the quran in depth
Study the linguistic resources, grammatical resources, …..
How do you transform character through the quran
Looking for guidance from Allah (subhanu wa ta'ala) to become a better human being, to do that
we have to have appreciate for the quran, its beauty, Build an appreciate for the QURAN
Literally perfection in the quran
We don’t just wanna know the stories of the quran, we wanna know why Allah (subhanu wa ta'ala) tells the story in that way, what makes it so beautiful.
Want to be able to sit there, recite and reflect on the quran, and what is the quran saying to me.
There is a really good formula and the formula is
You recite the quran and turn every ayah into a dua for yourself.
If you are serious about quran, you better be serious about reading and memorizing, if you have decided quran will be a serious part of your life than reading, reciting and tajweed should be a serious part of your life. We should focus on one thing at a time, put blinders on it, and get it right, finish one thing then move on the next thing.
Whatever I accomplished, I focused on my goals, and focus on my resources. The Goal long term should be to become so good at arabic that you could speak it, when you speak a language then you listen Allah speak to you in that language you just taste it differently. You want to work your way to the feeling that Allah (subhanu wa ta'ala) is actually talking to you. One thing make sure you have the vocabulary, for the salah, cause once you become conscious of the prayer, you will have so much barakah.
Questions:
A lot of the detail tafsir lecture are on podcast, arabic ciriculum n cover to cover - www.bayinnah.tv
You have to take it one day at a time, no one will ever know the whole quran, we should accept that its an endless ocean of beauty.
What to do with the lack of consistency/ forgetfulness?
You develop forgetfulness if you are not consistent with the review, if you make your sunnah prayer a opportunity for review then you don’t have to make extra time for review.
Don’t force urself, have an easy schedule.
Recommended Tafasir:
Language : urdu - maariful quran, tabararul quran ibn tafsir is really good,
English : pondering over the quran, maariful quran in english, don’t think ibn kathir is too beneficial for beginning students
Arabic: imam razi insight, tafsir al kashaf, al shauqani tafseer, (didn't get much)
My recommendation, take two classical, two contemporary, then go into deeper studies. (for higher student of knowledge )
