Trial of Grave

“The belief of Ahlu As-Sunnah Wal-Jama`ah (Adherents to the Prophet’s Tradition and Consensus of Muslim Community) is that there is torment and punishment in the grave and life in Al-Barzakh (the interval between death and the Day of Resurrection), and there is blessing and pleasure, according to the status of the deceased. The evidence for that is the verse that reads: “The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening; and on the day when the Hour upriseth (it is said): Cause Pharaoh's folk to enter the most awful doom." (Ghafir: 46)

In the above-mentioned verse, Allah states that the people of Pharaoh are exposed to torment morning and afternoon even though they are dead. From this verse, the scholars affirmed that the torment of the grave is real.

Ibn Katheer said: This verse is the main basis of the belief of Ahlu As-Sunnah as regard the torment of Al-Barzakh) as Allah states: “The Fire, they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon” (Ghafir: 46) (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 4/82)

According to the hadith narrated by `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) she said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to finish his prayer by saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, I seek refuge in You from the tribulation of the Dajjaal (the Antichrist), I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death, O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and ruin.” (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The relevant point in this hadith is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave. This is one of the pieces of evidence that confirm the torment of the grave. No one disputed the torment of the grave apart from the Mu`tazilah and some other groups whose views do not attract any consideration.

According to the most correct scholarly view, the torment of the grave befalls both the soul and the body. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“The view of the Salaf (Ancestors) of this Ummah and its Imams is that the torment or blessing (of the grave) happens to the soul of the deceased and his body. After it departs the body, the soul continues to be blessed or punished, and it is also connected to the body from time to time, so that the blessing or torment reflects on the body as well as the soul.”

So we must believe in that which Allah has told us.” (al-Ikhtiyaaraat al-Fiqhiyyah, p. 94)

The scholars likened that to dreams, for when sleeping a person may dream that he is traveling, and he may feel happiness or grief and sorrow. Imagine that happening in this world, it is more apt that things should be different in the life of Al-Barzakh which is completely different from the life of this world and the life of the Hereafter.

An-Nawawi said: “If it is said, we see the deceased and how he is in his grave, so how can he be questioned, made to sit up and beaten with iron rods, when no mark is left on him? The answer is that this is not impossible, and indeed there is a similar case in our regular lives, that of the sleeper who feels joy or pain of which we feel nothing. A person who is awake may also feel joy or pain because of something he hears or thinks about, and those who are sitting with him feel nothing of that. Similarly, Jibreel used to come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and tell him of the revelation, and the people present were unaware of it. All of that is clear and evident.” (Sharh Muslim, 17/201)

Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: “When a person sleeps, he may feel joy or pain, and that happens to his soul and his body. He may dream that someone is beating him and wake up with pain in his body, or he may dream that he is being fed some good food, then wake up with the food in his mouth. This is something that really happens. If the body and soul of a sleeping person experience joy and pain that are not felt by the person next to him, and a sleeper may even cry out because of the intensity of pain or fear of what is happening to him, and those who are awake can notice this, even hear him reciting Qur’an or Dhikr (remembrance of Allah), or talking though he is asleep with his eyes closed, and he does not hear them if they speak to him – then how can we deny that the one who is buried in his grave also feels things? How come we don’t believe the message of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said that a person buried in the grave hears the footsteps of his companions when they start to depart.

The heart is akin to the grave, hence the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, when he missed `Asr on the day of al-Khandaq: “May Allah fill their hearts and graves with fire.” And Allah differentiated between them (graves and hearts) in the verse that reads: “Knoweth he not that, when the contents of the graves are poured forth. And the secrets of the breasts are made known.” (Al-`Adiyat: 9-10) This is just to explain that this could happen.

We cannot say that the blessing or torment that the dead experiences in the grave is typically like that which a sleeper experiences when he dreams; the blessing or torment in the grave is more overwhelming and far-reaching; it is a real blessing and a real torment. But this example is given to show that this is possible, and to refute the idea of those who say that the dead person does not make any movement in his grave, and the soil does not change, and so on.

WAYS TO AVOID GRAVE PUNISHMENT

-perform Prayers on time (MAY ALLAH HELP US)

-Every Muslim should avoid all types of sin and seek Allah Ta'ala's protection against the torments in the grave. During salaah, after reciting Attahiyaat before finishing his salaah, the Messenger of Allah r used to seek Allah's protection against the hardships in the grave. Therefore, make it a habit to say: ALLAA-HUMMA IN-NEE A'OOZU BIKA MIN AZAABIL QABR (O Allah, I seek Your protection against the punishment of the grave).

-Recite Surah al-Mulk every night before going to sleep, as this is also a means of safety in the grave.

The Prophet said, ‘There is a surah in the Qur’an which is only thirty verses. It defended whoever recited it until it puts him into paradise’ i.e. Surah al Mulk
[Fath al Qadir 5/257, Sahihul Jamiea 1/680, Tabrani in Al-Awsat & Ibn Mardawaith]

Abu Huraira (radiAllahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, “The Qur’an contains a surah of thirty ayats which will intercede for a man until he is forgiven. It is: ‘Blessed be He who has the Kingdom in His Hand!’ (67)”
[abu Dawud, Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi, Riyad as-Salihin by Imam an-Nawawi Ch.183 #1016]

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, ‘Surah al Mulk is the protector from the torment of the grave’
[Sahihul Jamiea 1/680, Hakim 2/498 & Nasai

Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas (radiAllahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, ‘It is my desire/love that Surahtul Mulk should be in the heart of every Muslim’
[Hakim, al-Hisnul Haseen by the cassical scholar Muhammad al-Jazri]

Grave punishment is true. Muslims must believe in it and stay away from things that can bring it on.
However the pictures from the screen in the video are not TRUE. Recently the same pictures were being circulated as a story from OMAN. The same pictures with a different story of a boy in Oman who did not pray.

So we can tell about the punishment of the grave without this false story.

Hey guys; thanks for not letting me sleep tonight! I scanned through the video and saw the picture of the boy, and now I'm probably going to get nightmares :D

In all seriousness, however, seeing the picture of that boy makes me fear Allah...

SUbhanAllah, that was shocking. May Allah pretect us from doing evil.
Just some questions I was wondering about, in any way would it be haram to tape the dead? and if it was permisible for any reason to re-dig the grave back up?

I am not sure how true the story is. Actually I saw the video a year a go when one member of our mosque brought the CD with him from Jordan Amman
(Believe2Succeed) the link you posted it says Oman, in Arabic they right both Aman and Oman in the same way. who ever posted the story translated the story in to english and wrote Oman.. any way.... If the story is true May Allah Have mercy on him if its not true then Its a good reminder for us.

again I am not sure how true the story is. But as reminder for my self first and every one that performing Sallah ( prayers ) on time and reading surrah Al`mulk (which is only 30 verses) every night can portect us from grave punishment.

The Prophet said, ‘There is a surah in the Qur’an which is only thirty verses. It defended whoever recited it until it puts him into paradise’ i.e. Surah al Mulk

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, ‘Surah al Mulk is the protector from the torment of the grave’

Wa alaykum salam,

I edited out the video because I have seen this before, and it is a fake. There are ALL sorts of stories going around about it. Even if it real, it is haram to dig up a body and to talk bad about the dead. I mean come on!! thats just silly!!

The Prophet :saw: told people to always speak good about the Muslims who die. There is no use in talking about anything bad they do.

And also, I think things such as Tawheed, Aqeedah, praying are far more important then whether a boy listened to music or peed his pants. (thats the Albanian version someone once sent me a year ago! before it was on video google)

Showing weird rotting bodies kinda gross. And it makes Muslims look really stupid!! for believing in this nonsense.

We do not need videos, pictures or anything to justify our beliefs. The Punishment of the Grave is a matter of the unseen, nobody should have this strange idea of having "evidence" of punishment of grave. Although, that is not what our dear brother MrMuslim said, it is something the video wants people to think.

And Allah knows best.

Instead of deleting the thread completely, I edited it. I hope you understand reasons behind that now.

JazakAllahu khayr.

JAK Br. Mabsoot.

Yes it is a fake story. I told the same thing in my posts.
Also we have hadeeth of Rasul Allah SAW that whomever spreads rumors is like a liar. So we should be careful of what we circulate.
Mr. Muslim thought it was real. I hope he is not offended by my comments.

Another important matter is that punishement of the grave is not possible to be seen by the living.

May Allah SWT guide us and protect us ! (ameen)

Either way, that video scared me. Honestly, I can't really believe that a grave was dug from the grave like that, because, to me, it would seem illogical for that to really happen. I dunno, there's too much to say regarding that subject.

Secondly, Surah-Al-Mulk is an easy Surah to memorize as well. Alhumdulillah, once my cousin told me that Hadith, I started reading Surah-Al-Mulk everyday and now I have it memorized. I reccomend everyone to read it at night, it takes only three minutes, tops.

this video/pictures have been curculating for some time now. I was scheptical the very first time I saw it. Many bodies have been exhumed for different purposes, the main one is homoside investigations. Most of these bodies were unbelievers and they came up normal. If man or Jinn could hear or witness the questioning in the grave, they would faint or die. Islam is a moderate religeon with logics and consistency. These are matters of the ghaib (unseen). They were not meant for our eyes. There are many phenomenon out there orchestrated by Man or Jinn and we have to be careful not to get caught up. I recently posted a thread named I saw a miracle. It seemed to have been removed because I never saw it again. Maybe I was misunderstood. I was describing the moon which everybody sees and labeled it a miracle. These are the things (the moon floating in space, the sunrise, the sunset etc) that go unnoticed everyday and we take it for granted. One thing out of the normal happens or seems to have happend and it spreads like wild fire all over the world. If this post remains:redface: Whenever anyone of you walk outside, look at Allah's miracles every where (in his creation) all we have to do is notice.:jazaak:

With all do respect to all of you I agree with every one that the grave punishment is something cant be heard by human or jinn, But I can mention to you stories which a lot of people may deny them I heard them from shyokh about the grave punishment, even incidents before putting the body in the grave...and after putting them into the grave may Allah protect us all.

How true this video or picture none of us can say.. because non of us know the reality?
The video or the picture are not important... we don’t need the picture or the video to believe in the grave punishment, our prophet peace be up on him informed us and Allah s.w.t mentioned it in the Quran so we believe in them..

The point from the post was ... to read surrah Al Mulk every night and to perform our prayers on time

Asslamo Allaikum Brothers,

Please note that my query was based on genuine surprise and not sarcasm. I just can’t believe people in 2006 actually believe/assume any picture circulating on the Internet to be authentic to be forwarded to others & shared...

Corel Draw is an awesome tool & a lot can be done with it. :) :) :)

As far as the punishment of the grave is concerned it is proven from Sunah & off course there are stories in the Islamic literature (of people’s experiences) & so on...whether it can be captured on Camera conclusively is a different matter (an interesting debate no doubt) & personally it won’t make much difference to my Eemaan whether I can see it on Camera or not (personal opinion and off course others have a right to disagree).

P.S: With the blessing of Allah (SWT) & through no ability of my own...I do read Surah Mulk every night.
