A Clarification of Doubts Concerning the Life of Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab
[Based upon the book: Refutations of the Allegations of Those Opposed to the Movement of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab]

Some of the enemies of the Salafee Da‘wah have claimed that Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab broke away from the Ottoman Caliphate, and thus departed from majority in disobedience.

Ibn Afaaliq describes the tawheed of the followers of the Salafee Da‘wah as such:

"As for their tawheed, then it includes going against Muslims…and this is disbelief and not tawheed ."

Addressing them, ‘Umar al-Mahjoob said:

"…and you have fallen into disobedience."

Ibn ‘Aabideen in his commentary described the followers of this da‘wah as Khawaarij, and that was under the chapter of " The wrong-doers (al-Bughaat)", and they are the ones who go against the obedience of the Imaam without a true (proof). [1]

Dahlaan claims that the followers of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab:

"…have departed the majority." [2]

Az-Zahaawee as well, claims that they are notorious for:

"…deserting the obedience of Ameerul-Mu’mineen".

Many of the enemies of the da‘wah described the Shaykh and his followers as Khawaarij, because one of the attributes of Khawaarij is that they go against the Imaam of Muslims, and they become disobedient as soon as they observe some sins of this Imaam that are far below Major Disbelief.

And this is illustrated with what al-Amlee claims. He says:

"The Khawaarij have made the fighting of the Kings of Muslims and going against them permissible… So did the Wahhaabiyyah."

The author of the book "A summary of the History of Arabs" includes a chapter in his book titled "The Uprising of the Wahhaabiyyah against the obedience".

‘Abdul-Qadeem claim that the upcoming of Wahhaabism was one of the reasons behind the fall of the Caliphate, he says:

"The Wahhaabiyyah founded a state within the Islaamic State under the leadership if Muhammad Ibn Sa‘ood and then his son ‘Abdul-‘Azeez. England supported them with weapons and money, and based on ideology they have thrust forward to conquer Islaamic lands that were under the control of the Sultaan, in other words they have raised the sword in the face of the Caliph and killed the Islaamic Army, the army of Ameerul-Mu’mineen (Leader of the Faithful) by means of instigation and support from the English."

And before starting to answer the claim of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab’s revolt against the Caliph, it is appropriate to mention what the Shaykh believed of the creed that necessitates the obedience to the Imaam of Muslims, regardless of whether they are dutiful or wrong-doers, unless they order a disobedience of Allaah, for obedience (to them) is only for things that are good.

The Shaykh says in his letter to the people of Qaseem:

"And I believe in the obligation of submitting and being obedient to the Imaams of Muslims, the dutiful of them as well as the wrong-doers of them, as long as they don't order a disobedience of Allaah, and the person who is responsible for Khilaafah; he whom the people have gathered around and accepted, and he who has forced his way to become Caliph as well, his obedience is obligatory and revolting against him is unlawful (haraam)."

He also says:

"The third source: To make our gathering complete we have to listen to and obey those who rule us, even if it was an Abyssinian slave, and Allaah has explained this to us fully in various forms of explanations, legislative and destined, and then this foundation became to be unknown to a lot of those who claim to have knowledge, never mind practicing it."

In answering such claims, an integral question needs to be answered: Was Najd, the home of this movement, under the control of the Ottoman Khilaafah?

Dr. Saalih al-‘Ubood answers:

" In general, Najd did not witness the sovereignty of the Ottomans, for their power did not reach it, nor their governors, nor at any time preceding the lifetime of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab did a Turkish flag rise in it. What proves this reality is reading through the managerial divisions of the Ottomans. A treatise by Yameen ‘Alee Afandee (who was the treasurer of the Haqqaanee book in the year (1018H), corresponding to 1609) titled "The laws of the Ottoman/ the contents of the book of Deewaan", reveals that starting with the eleventh Hijree century, the Ottoman Khilaafah split into thirty two distinct divisions (iyala), fourteen of each are Arabic, and Najd is not included in those, except for al-Ihsaa, if we were to consider it to be part of Najd.."

Dr. ‘Abdullaah al-‘Uthaymeen says:

"Prior to the upcoming of the call of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab, Najd was not under the direct dominion of Ottomans, nor did it witness any sovereignty from within. Banee Jabr, Banee Khaalid, and the Shareefs were not sovereign, and civil strife between the tribes of Najd was the norm."

Dr. Aajil al-Nashmee says:

"The Khilaafah did not pay attention to Najd and the neighbouring territories. This policy may be attributed to the vastness of Najd, on one side, and on the other side the presence of the tribal fragmentation."

What proves that the position of the Shaykh was fine, and that the Shaykh did not hesitate as to the fact that his movement is not related to the Khilaafah is the letter sent to Faadil al-Mazeed, the ruler of the Syrian desert:

" This thing that they have disapproved of me, that they hated me for and created enmity between me and them for; if they ask any scholar in Syria or Yemen and others, they will say this is the truth and it is the religion of Allaah and His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). However, I cannot make it public in my area because the state does not approve of it, and Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab managed to because the ruler in his area did not disapprove of it, rather when he knew the truth he followed it."

As for "Zuloom's" claim that the movement of the Shaykh was one of the reasons behind the fall of the Khilaafah, and that the English helped the Wahhaabees to achieve this cause, then Muhammad Mahdee al-Istanboolee answers this flat allegation:

"It was incumbent on this author to support his view with proofs, and in the past the poet said: If the allegations were not based on their proofs/with texts, then it is a proof of foolishness.

To the contrary, History reveals that those English were opposed to this movement from the beginning, fearing a re-awakening of the Islaamic World."

Al-Istanboolee also says:

"It is strange, both amusing and saddening, that this author accuses the movement of the Shaykh of being one of the causes behind the fall of the Ottoman Khilaafah. It is needless to say that this movement was founded in the year 1811, and the Khilaafah was destroyed in the year 1922."

And what proves that the English were against the Wahhaabee movement is that they have sent Captain Forster Saddler to congratulate Ibraaheem Pasha on the victory he gained over the Wahhaabiyyah- referring to the war in Dar‘iyyah-, and to confirm also how inclined he is to cooperate with the British Act against the Wahhaabee piracy in the Arabian Gulf (The most aggressive attacks/ kidnapping of the Royal British vessels that roamed in the Gulf and the Indian Ocean carrying the treasures of India to the empress was carried by well known Wahhaabee centres on the Gulf coast- which until as recent as the fifties was referred to on international maps as the pirates coast- such as Sharjah and Raasul-Khaymah.)

Moreover this letter stated clearly the intention of the British government to create an agreement with Ibraaheem Pasha with the goal of annihilating the Wahhaabee control.

Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Mandthoor an-Nawmaanee says:

"The English have used the position in India that opposed Shaykh Muhammd Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab in order to throw anybody who opposed them with the label "Wahhaabee" And as such the English called the scholars of Deoband, India - Wahhaabiyyah due to their open opposition to the English"

Rather the priest Zuimer mentioned that the Wahhaabiyyah in India do not expose their beliefs because call for Jihaad against the English was ascribed to them.

You have no proof for what you say, it is not good to speak out of ignorance and speak badly about others espcially a scholar he did not creat a new sect he revived the Islam and the sunnah in his land and removed shirk by the will of Allah. Plus the save sect is a sect and one of the 73 sects will be saced so can you tell me of a more correct one then the one of the salaf that the Shaykh revived and followed.

Akhi what you have to understand is who are you refering to when you say wahabi because anyone who has a beard and raises his hand in salah when going to another position is labled wahhabi if you are speak of the kawarij who have been labeld wahhab so as to misguide the people from the works of the Shaikh. That is why I tell get knowledge and see what he truly preached if you read any of his books you will not find him to be an evil man or a caller to misguidance. Because Bin Ladin is labeld a wahhabi and he has been refuted by Shaikh Bin Baz whom you say is wahhabi and their manhaj is so different from each other how could they possably both be wahhabis. So Akhi please get your facts straight.

no its not who said this, you are just making statement and who are the wahhabis that you speak of I told you so many different people are called wahhabi so you may be right but be specific

'If you read Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahab's book Kitab at-Tawheed you will see how much Muhammad ibn abdul-wahab writes and how much is just the Quran and Sunnah'

He brought people away from shirk and back into guidance.

:jazaak: that is the format of all his books he says little it is all quran and sunnah and what he says is just a meaning of the ayah or hadeeth that he has mention or is about to mention. Good thing you pointed that out

He did not come with any new sect in fact he revived the sunnag of our beloved prophet (pbuh) The sheik took from the salaf and implemented it in the arabia desert. at the time hijaz was full of shirk people was praying to garves of the prohet and his companions asking them for from allah when allah clearly tell us in his book that that is shirk. The word wahhabis came about from the enemies of islam at that time at no point whatsoever did muhammad ibn abdulwahhab or his students call there selves wahabbas. He practice his deen according to the salif asalih the corect way to practice islam. here is a website I know that mabsoot doesnt like when people put up links but may he allow this one because its about getting true knowledge of our deen www.thewahhabimyth.com please check it out.....barakallahfeek

Wahabism Exposed!

We begin with the Name of Allaah

The term "Wahabism" has been in vogue for over a century and it began to be used in India and spread to the whole of Muslim world. It is a derogatory and an accusatory term used to denigrate Muslims of certain Aqeedah and who shun certain practices, perceived by others to be Islamic. According to users of the term "Wahabism" it refers to Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab of Nejd in the Arabian peninsula who lived in the eighteenth century C.E.

In Muslim culture when a group is attributed or associated with a person it is done for the following commonality:
1. When people belong to a certain tribe or a place or country or descendence, such as Ansari, Jaafari, Pakistani, Hindi, Johani, Saudi, Bukhari and so on.
2. When people belong to a certain aqeedah, such as, Ashari, Juhaimi, Sunni, Shi'ah, Khwariji, Zahiri, Batini, and many others.
3. When people belong to a certain Sufi order, such as Chishti, Suhrawardi, Quadri, Naqshbandi, Shadhli, Tijani and so on.
4. When people belong to a certain madhhab or school of thought of fiqh, such as Jaafri, Zaidi, Hanafi, Maliki, Shafe'i, Hanbali, Salafi and so on.

Let us examine "Wahabism" to find which of the above categories it fits.

There is no place or tribe or country or nation or family by the name of "Wahab"; it is therefore, not applicable. If we examine to see if Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhab originated a new aqeedah we find no such thing in his teachings to give credit to him for something new. Did he originate a new Sufi order? We discover that he was neither a sufi nor he supported them, in fact, he fought against certain innovations of the sufis. Did Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhab presented any new school of fiqhi principles? We find that he was himself an ardent follower of HANBALI madh-hab, and he revered Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal. One of the major contributions of Muhammad Ibn Abdul- wahhab is that he discovered and brought into the limelight another great Hanbali scholar, Imam Ibn Taimiyah and his student Ibn Qayyim. We find that Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhab remained throughout his life a follower of Hanbali madh-hab and did not deviate much from it.

In the light of what has been said there is no definition of the term "Wahabism" possible except as a label to bring hatred against certain group of people. It is stereotyping, slanderous and a hate-mongering term; no educated person should allow himself to the use of this term. Those who made their goal to fight "Wahabism" are fighting a non-existent enemy, a creation of a figment of their own mind, an imaginary ghost.

Alleged "Wahabis" do not call any one to follow any new fiqh, any sufi order, any new aqeedah but they call Muslims to follow the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Prophet (saws) found in the famous books of Hadith like Bukhari, Muslim, Muwatta, Ibn Majah, Abu Dawud, Ibn-Majah and others. The books of Hadith mentioned are famous and all Sunni Muslims give lip service to them. It is unfortunate that those who call you to go one step beyond lip service to the Qur'an and Sunnah and implement the teachings in your lives are labelled as Wahabis by their opponents.

Who was Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhab? He was a reformer and called people to the Qur'an and Sunnah instead of getting trapped into following personality cults of self-appointed, ignorant religious leaders leading masses into the pit of disgrace in this world and the pit of fire in the life hereafter. He did hurt the business of selfish, ignorant and arrogant religious leaders of Arabian Peninsula and he tried to eliminate shirk (associationism with Allah) and bid'ah (innovation in the deen al-Islam). Naturally, those who were hurt by Muhammad's teaching screamed and fought back with their own devilish instruments of slander, lies and hate mongering.

The Crusaders of Europe wanted to evict Muslims from Jerusalem but could not do so without creating hate hysteria in the European population. Today, in America there are Christian Crusaders of pen and tongue, like Anis Shorrosh, Robert Morey, John Ankerberg and others who are fanning the flames of hatred against Muslims through slander, lies and fabrications about Islam and Muslims. In our age, our enemies have adopted another Christian term to denigrate Muslims, that is, fundamentalism, a term without definition but made derogatory.

All educated, intelligent and thinking Muslim brethren have a duty to isolate all those who use the term "Wahabism" or "Wahabis" and associate them with hate mongering groups. We have a duty to love all those who profess to be Muslims and educate those who are ignorant of the true teachings of Islam, rather than creating hate. Those who use the term 'Wahabism or Wahabis" are agents of our enemies, particularly, our worst enemy, Shaytan. We have a duty to do all we can to free our brethren from the clutches of Shaytan and his friends.

In our time, when Islam and Muslims are under attack from all sides, from Christians, Jews, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and secular nationalists, it is not right for us to divide ourselves and fight against each other. We have to pool our resources together and fight the common enemies of Islam and Muslims. If a group among us is different, we should learn to ignore the differences, emphasize the commonality and call each other to the true teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Messenger (saws) of Allah. We should not call any group of people by any name which they do not like, that is slander. There is no group of people who like to be called "Wahabis", therefore, this term should be dropped by the Muslims. The term "Wahabis" and "Wahabism" was the invention of the Britsih to divide Muslims and fight against each other and weaken each other, so that British could continue to conquer Muslims land and rule them. We should not allow ourselves to continue to be the victims of Imperialist designs.

Wahabism???

Asslamo Allaikum Brothers/Sisters,

To me the question is not so much about Shaykh Ibn Wahab (RA) rather its about his followers providing legitimacy to the family of Ibn-e-Saud who colluded with the British Empire and broke away and formed the only country in the world which is named after its founder i.e. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

I have read the works of Shaykh Ibn Wahab (RA) and Masha’Allah there is not a lot which is contradictory to the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.

However the Brothers/Sisters who are in Love with Saudia and its government must come to terms with the facts that the Saudi government has single-handedly done untold DAMAGE to the Muslim Ummah…I found two types of Brothers/Sisters who are in perpetual Love with the Saudi Government:

1) Who are in Love of Saudi Arabia because of the Books/Works about Islam that are being published from there and CHOOSE to ignore this cancerous growth in the heart of Islam

2) Those who are ignorant of the history of the world and Saudia Arabia

For Brothers/Sisters who are in Category 1 I suggest you read the letter sent to the Rulers of Saudi Arabia by the citizens of Saudi Arabia co-signed by 500 [yes that’s 500] Islamic Scholars of Saudi Arabia itself…I would also suggest that you go live there and check the country out for yourself…

For Brothers/Sisters who are in Category 2 I suggest to read the history of Saudi Arabia between 1901 & 1930 and read a book called “House of Saud” for starters...

http://www.amazon.com/House-Saud-Sa..._bbs_sr_1/105-9841592-3656415?ie=UTF8&s=books

To all Brothers/Sisters who deny the untold damage done by the Saudi regime to Islam please reply or PM (if you don’t want to discuss the issues in Public)

Please note that in my message I have not disrespected to the works of scholars in Saudi about Islam but Saudi Arabia is nevertheless an appalling country with an appalling regime with an appalling human rights record which has 100’s of Muslim scholars imprisoned and being tortured as I write this…

Let’s not praise people/places unnecessarily and lets get a perspective here.

P.S: Lets call a Spade a Spade…After all we will be judged by Allah (SWT)

Walaikum salam warahmatullah. I have watched the video "House of Saud" I didnt know there was a book as well. Jazakhallahu khair for posting it. Im sure it will make a good read for a lot of ignorant people out there

Please note that in my message I have not disrespected to the works of scholars in Saudi about Islam but Saudi Arabia is nevertheless an appalling country with an appalling regime with an appalling human rights record which has 100’s of Muslim scholars imprisoned and being tortured as I write this…

I have watched the video 'House of Saud' I didn't realise there was a book as well, Jazakhallahu khair for posting.

You are right about Saudi I have had encounters as well with people who dont open their eyes to see the truth. Some people say as long as it is the Holy Land nothing bad can happen there, to be honest a lot of people just dont want to know. It is sad when people just blind follow and make takfeer on sincere brothers yet say nothing about the apostates and hypocrites. When a person revives the Sunnah or follows Islam the way it is supposed to be you are labelled a 'wahabi' "terrorist', 'fundamentalist' etc.

A lot of people want a laid back Islam, you want to be a muslim yet you still want to have girl/boyfriends etc. If someone says NO as muslims you should live like this and that or call for Sharia, you are an 'extremist' and they are secular. Its time people wake up from their sleep and realise that no we are not Wahabi, extremist or fundamentalists but followers of Quran and Sunnah. This makes me really mad when people defend falsehood or make takfeer on sincere brothers yet say nothing about scholars on the payroll, etc etc.

May Allah guide us all to the straight path and be of the saved sect.

Dear brothers and Sisters,
What you mean Salafism, Sunnism, jamathe .. hooohho :angryred:

Here in Saudi Arabia, with my experience, I can say something.....

Due to salafi view, Tharaveeh Sala (Ramadan night prayer) is eight rakahath in Sadui Arabia, except Makkah and Madinah..
In Makkah and Madina it is 20 Rakahath!!! If, salafi point is OK, how it happened???

Another thing, alhamdulillah, just 20 day before, I visited Rasul (SA)'s Raula Shareef. I saw (with own eye :SMILY335: ), Prophet(SA)'s, 'Aboobacker and Umar(RA)'s Kabars raised more than 1/2 meter and covered with green cloths....
Based on Salafi's view, raising Kabar and covering it with cloth especially with silk is haram. if it haram...how it happened in Raula Shareef????

(Believe me I am a freethinker ...so, if they are true how these happened in Holycities???? my these words are not based on anybodies argument is because of my experience)

Asslamo Allaiukum,

I have also lived/worked in Saudi Arabia and seen many things which are in ABSOLUTE contradiction with the Sunnah; I would like to bring a few facts to your attention about Brothers/Sisters in the West:

1) Many of them admire Saudia because majority of the Islamic books/material they read or refer to originate from Saudia and may Allah (SWT) reward everyone for their efforts and works. Most of them have either NEVER been to Saudia or if they have visited its for a short visit for Umrah/Hajj so they dismiss all criticism about Saudi as propaganda from the Kuffar because the source of their Islamic knowledge is from Saudi Arabia so in their mind they have assigned a utopian status to Saudi Arabia and accept everything from their VERBATIM whether the issue pertains to Islam or Not and this is because of their good opinion about Saudia…Saudia is followed “Blindly” in moon sighting and other issues when there is absolutely NO evidence in the Qur’aan or the Sunnah which dictates that Saudia should be followed…Saudi media is portrayed as a bastion of Islamic civilisation and Saudi TV/Radia/Newspaper are taken as a gospel versus anyone with rudimentary knowledge of the standards of Saudi media would beg to difer (Just Watch Tash Ma Tash on Saudi TV and you will know what I am talking about)

2) On the other hand there are others (mainly Sufees) who simply think that everyone in Saudi is a “WAHABI” and followers of Ibn-e-Wahab killed Sunees in large numbers and there is actually a sect called “Wahabees” and these guys are heretics and so on

3) We get a lot of Saudi scholars who visit the West & a lot of them are on Government payroll so they are biased to say the least and skewed in their political understanding and lean heavily towards defending Saudia…A lot of our Brothers/Sisters visit these lectures so it helps reinforce point # 1

4) We also have a lot of Brothers/Sisters who have actually studied in Saudi institutions on scholarship but if you dissect their stay in Saudia it is mainly limited to staying around Islamic universities and contact with mainly Muslims in Saudia (who are Masha’Allah on the Sunnah) so they often don’t get to see the real Saudia!

You will find criticism in the West from Muslims about Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, Iraq and other Muslim countries (and rightly so); however when it comes to Saudia most Brothers/Sisters either stay silent or dismiss the truth as propaganda as in their eyes Saudia and Saudees can do NO wrong…unfortunately if you read history this is exactly how the Catholic Church behaved towards “regimes” which it favoured….It actually saw no ill no matter how blatant it has.

Whether Brothers/Sisters admit to the 4 points above or note, they are facts.

Its the Support of some of his followers to the Saudi regime that I have a problem with and NOT his works/books
