Assalamu Alaikum,

The following is from the United States Postal Service website:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 28, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Postal Service today reissued the Eid stamp in the Holiday Celebrations series.

First issued in 2001, the stamp commemorates the two most important festivals in the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. On these days, Muslims wish each other “eid mubarak,” the phrase featured in calligraphy on the stamp, which translates as “blessed festival” or “may your religious holiday be blessed.”

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan with prayers, feasting, exchanging gifts, and visiting family and friends. Signifying “The Feast of Sacrifice,” Eid al-Adha occurs approximately two months and ten days after Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Adha comes at the end of the hajjae, the annual period of pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca and commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail. The stamp was developed with the help of Muslim consultants and experts in Islamic studies.

Employing traditional methods and instruments to create the stamp’s design, Arlington, VA-based calligrapher Mohamed Zakariya chose a script known in Arabic as thuluth and in Turkish as sulus. He describes it as “the choice script for a complex composition due to its open proportions and sense of balance.”

Zakariya used homemade black ink, and his pens were crafted from seasoned reeds from the Middle East and from Japanese bamboo from Hawaii. The paper was specially prepared with a coating of starch and three coats of an alum-and-egg-white varnish, then burnished with an agate stone and aged for more than a year. Zakariya’s black-and-white design was then colored by computer. The colors chosen for the stamp — gold script on a blue background — evoke great works of Islamic calligraphy from the past.

The Postal Service produced 40 million 41-cent Eid stamps in sheets of 20 that are available for purchase at local Post Offices, online at www.usps.com/shop, or by calling 800-STAMP-24 on Sept. 28.

Please read my position regarding using some positive statements or actions by non Muslims to remove the distortion against Islam in the West. It's point no. 4, found in the following post [post #14 of the thread "US Congress passes Ramadan Bill View Single Post "]:

I'd like to thank brother TheHumbleWun and sister ama662 for providing information about the above stamp on the thread "Empire State Building in NYC celebrates Eid?!" as shown in the links below:

I believe that this stamp deserves its own thread.

They actually had this design on t-shirts too a few years back and I got one for my hubby and he really loved it. I couldn't buy the stamps though cuz I live in Canada.

Assalamu Alaikum,

There's an organisation called "The International Union of Muslim Women" [IUMW]. It's director is a Muslim sister; Aminah Assilmi.

To read about Aminah Assilmi's conversion to Islam [and it's really quite a story], please click on the following link:

Why am I mentioning this information on this thread?

Well, the following is found on the The International Union of Muslim Women's website:

The International Union of Muslim women takes on special or short term projects. Our goal is to activate people in their communities to improve the quality of life for all individuals not just of their community but the world.

E'id Stamp

In 1996, a child in Reno Nevada brought us a wonderful new project. The fifth grader was an avid stamp collector and realized that there were stamp to commemorate all the major religions except Islam. He asked his mother, a member of IUMW, why there were no stamps for the Islamic holidays. The IUMW started work to have a special stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service, to commemorate our E'id. The E'id stamp was issued in August of 2001.

May Allah the Almighty reward the child who had this idea, the mother who told this idea to the IUMW and the director and staff of the IUMW for campaigning for the issue of this stamp.

Yeah you usually have to request the clerk at the counter to get the "Eid stamp” and they will usually go and bring it. I don't buy stamps it’s usually my father who gets it these days and unfortunately he doesn’t care what stamp he buys.

Asalaamalikum,

Mashallah bro for the thorough research. I can't believe you found the source person who came up with the idea. You deserve a round of a applause for putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

Do you know if the child got compensated for this patented idea? Maybe the U.S. Patent Office has that info.

Assalamu Alaikum brother TheHumbleWun,

Thank you for your kind words.

Could someone actually ask for a patent for presenting a new idea for a postage stamp?

Asalamalikum Akhi,

I think you can have a patent for almost anything - an idea or an invention. My cousin actually use to work at the U.S. Patent Office, I will ask him later when I get off work.

I'm sure the IMUW will have the info too.

Google has introduced a new service called "Google Patent Search". It could search over 7 million patents registered in the U.S. Patent Office and provide a copy of the actual pages of the patent, with you search terms highlighted.

Try out the following website:

I entered the terms "Eid" and "Stamp", and I got the following results:

It doesn't seem there's anything about the Eid postage stamp. If your cousin could find anything out, it would be great.

Salaam,

Sorry for the long waited reply brother Bluegazer.

Basically my cousin said that you might have to contact the USPS for those details, but the way patents work (not sure about copyrights) are if someone can prove they had the idea first (before someone else) within a certain time frame, another person with the idea (second) will not get a patent even if the first person didn't file for a patent, because the first guy can prove they had the idea first, they just hadn't filed for a legal patent.

Another thing though might be the kid may have surrendered their rights to the designer or organization and may have gotten some money out of it. Can't really be sure unless you contact them though. I tried emailing IMUW twice but they never replied back.

I don't think the Eid stamp is patentable...the stamp itself is (because it is an invention using particular chemical adhesives), but the design I think is either copy written or trademarked, because the design isn't really an invention, kind of like a drawing or a book.

The copyright office says 'A Copyright is a form of protection provided to the authors of "original works of authorship" including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works, both published and unpublished.

I searched the copyright office's database (see below) and did not find anything:

http://cocatalog.loc.gov

I don't think the kid would get paid unless it was an original design he came up with. I never used the copyright database before so I'm not sure how to display pictures on it, but I think this is how it works.

Only way to figure if the little kid got paid is you get in touch with him/family or through the IUMW (which I tried, but they did not respond).

Assalamu Alaikum brother TheHumbleWun,

Thank you for your effort and the information you provided. I just clicked on the link you posted.

I appreciate all your inquiries into this subject. I hope the folks in IUMW are alright. I don't know why they're not answering any e-mails.

Best regards,
