There are certain verses of the quran that can only be fully understood when you take into account the conditions and background of the verse. In this situation it is not refering to today's jews/christains. It is refering to those before the time of the prophet muhammad. And that this specific group disobeyed god after guidance, and the displeasure was such that they were turned into apes. So in summary, people need to take into account the background, time, conditions, science, history of certain verses into consideration otherwise you will not understand the issue at hand.

The quran is not racist to jews/christains, instead quran refers to them using great honourable titles, eg calls them the people of the book, because they indeed did recieved allah's previous revalation and prophets. And certain verses even mention good qualities about them saying among them are men dedicated to learning. So the quran speaks about them, using correct labels for each sect/group, when such praiseworthy is justified, words of nobility is used hence 'people of the book' and when the peoples/groups did indeed do unjust to themselves and against allah then rightfully so, the correct negative terms are uses for them.
I hope this helps.

it's the same old trick that missionaries and haters of islam try to use to discourage or plant seeds of doubt into the hearts and minds of muslims. if you take the qur'an or any religious text out of context you will always find something that seems violent or racist. inderstanding the qur'an in it's proper context will only prove that the haters of islam are wrong.

9:5 mandates that Muslims kill the pagans of Mecca (Mushrikeen) unless they accept Islam. Nothing about the Jews or the Christians.

Which is just as bad as mandating that Jews and Christians be killed, so there's not anything you can say for that one.

That's easy! Let's take the allegations one at a time:

5:51 says that we are not to be allies with the Jews and the Christians. Nothing about slaying them.

9:5 mandates that Muslims kill the pagans of Mecca (Mushrikeen) unless they accept Islam. Nothing about the Jews or the Christians.

9:29 says that we should fight (Qaatilu) the people of the Book until they agree to pay the defense tax (Jizya). Nothing about killing them.

2:62-65 The first verse, 2:62, states that Jews, Christians and Sabeans who believe in God, the hereafter and do good have nothing to fear or worry about!! A far cry from being called pigs and apes! The last verse, 2:65 tells the story when some Jews defied the Sabbath and He punished them by turning them into apes. The bible is full of similar stories of how God sent down a variety of punishments on the Jews for their continued rebellion against God. Is the bible racist then?

5:59-60 states that God cursed "some people" by turning "some of them" (Ja`ala minhum) into pigs and apes. How did your commentator figure that God is talking here about him? LOL!

7:166 states that when a group of unnamed people (7:163) violated the Sabbath, most of their fellows (Ummatun minhum) warned them of the consequences (7:164), God punished the violators by turning them into apes and saved their fellows who warned them. What is racist about punishing the wrong doers and rewarding the faithful?

The Jews really think of themselves as a privileged race and that's the biggest problem they always had and still do. The Jews are not a race, they are followers of a religion. The Jews are not privileged. They once were but not anymore. When they broke the covenant and rejected Jesus and Muhammad, they lost their chosen status with God and became cursed instead. You can't continue to thumb your nose to God and expect Him to keep patting you on the head!

:mashallah: I just loved your response! you are quite knowledgeable! may Allah bless you with your 'ilm. So did you look these up or did they come to your head after reading the post?

9:5. Then when the sacred months (the Ist, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islâmic calendar) have passed, Then kill the Mushrikûn (See V.2:105) wherever You find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and Every ambush. but if they repent and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and give Zakât, Then leave their Way free. Verily, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Above Verse from Surah Taubah is very often quoted by critics of Islam, to show that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed and brutality. This explanation below shows why correct interpretation of Quranic verses is very important:

Context of verse is during battlefield

Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriqs (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriqs of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriqs of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. Verse 5 of Surah Taubah says:

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful." [Al-Qur'an 9:5]

Note that this verse above is quoted during a battle.

Analogy of war between America and Vietnam

We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war.

Hence Verse 9:5 quoted to boost morale of Muslims during battle

Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur'an says, "Kill the Mushriqs where ever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur'an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don't be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.

Some people from verse 5 jumps to verse 7 of Surah Taubah. Any sensible person will realise that he has skipped verse 6. Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

"If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge." [Al-Qur'an 9:6]

The Qur'an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don't just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?

Islam does not allow or sanctify the killing any innocent person regardless of his or her religion. According to the Qur'an and Hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) life is sacrosanct.

We read in the Qur'an: ". . . Do not take life, which Allah has made sacred, except through justice and the law. He orders this so that you may acquire wisdom" (6:151)

and,

"Do not take life, which Allah has made sacred, except for a just cause. If anyone is killed unjustly, We allow his heir (to seek justice) but do not allow him to exceed bounds when it comes to taking life, for he is helped (by the law)" (17:33).

According to the Qur'an, killing a person unjustly is the same as killing all of humanity, and saving a person is the same as saving all humanity. (See 5:32.)

Hence, Nowhere do these verses give general permission to kill any one. They were revealed to Prophet Muhammad at the time when the nonbelievers were attacking Makkah's Muslims and threatening those in Madinah. In contemporary jargon we may say that as the Muslims were subject to constant terrorist attacks on Madinah, Allah allowed them to defend themselves. These verses do not allow Muslims to engage in terrorism; rather, they are warnings against terrorism, but they also contain clear calls for restraint and care.

Also if Muslims stop taking this verse in correct context, then every year when sacred months are passed you can see Muslims running behind the Mushrikeen to kill them all over the world at the part of their religious duty. Did you ever hear this happening? Is it not a proof of the correct context beleived by Muslims as stated above?

Religious texts, if not read within their proper textual and historical contexts, are easily manipulated and distorted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let us look at the Bible and apply the standards applied above.

In Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Torah, Moses shares this message from God as the Israelites prepare to enter the Promised Land: "I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy." (Deut. 32:42)

"When the Lord, your God, brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girga*!*!*!*!es, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you. And when the Lord, your God, delivers them before you and you defeat them, destroy them utterly. Make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them" (Deuteronomy 7:1-2).

"When your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying ÔLet us go and serve other gods,' . . . you shall kill him, your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. You shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the Lord your God. . . " (Deuteronomy 13: 6-10)

"When you approach a city to fight it, offer it terms of peace. If it agrees to make peace with you and opens to you, all the people found in it shall become your forced labor and shall serve you. However, if it does not make peace with you, but makes war against you, besiege it. When the Lord your God gives it into your hand, kill all the men in it. Take as booty only the women, children, animals, and all that is in the city, all its spoils. Use the spoils of your enemies which the Lord your God has given you. . . Only in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. Do not leave alive anything that breathes" (Deuteronomy 20:10-17).

"Kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But spare for yourselves all virgin maidens" (Numbers 31:17-18).

"I will send my terror in front of you. . . you shall utterly demolish them and break their pillars in pieces" (Exodus 23: 23-24, 27).

The New Testament attributes the following statements to Jesus:

"Do not think that I have come to send peace on Earth. I did not come to send peace, but a sword. I am sent to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law" (Mathew 10:34-35).

"I say to you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. As for my enemies who do not want me to reign over them, bring them here and kill them in my presence" (Luke 19:26-27).

There are dozens of other verses that, if taken out from their historical context, seem to favor violence. Some violent Muslim groups misuse the Qur'anic verses just as various violent Jewish and Christian groups have used them to justify their causes. The Crusaders used them against Muslims and Jews. The Nazis used them against Jews. Serbian Christians used them against Bosnian Muslims, and Zionists regularly use them against Palestinians. David Koresh, Jim Jones, and Baruch Goldstein all relied on religious texts to justify their violence.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Muslims believe in all Prophets sent by Allah, and so do not misuse or misinterpret the religious texts of other faiths in order to defame them. Even in recent times, Muslims have and are facing genocidal campaigns in various parts of the world they have not questioned Judaism and Christianity or Hinduism. Such a spirit needs to be reciprocated.

One must realize, though, that Islam is a realistic religion. It recognizes that war is a condition inherent to man. God Himself when He created humans realized it, but for some reason He persisted in his experiment:

"Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: 'I will create a vicegerent on earth.' They said: 'Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?' He said: 'I know what ye know not.'" (2:30)

The angels knew that humans would only produce mischief like violence and would not worship God, but God had His reasons for creating man.

War in Islam is the last resort to solving an irreconcilable conflict. One must bear in mind that the Muslims bore years of hardship and religious persecution by the Meccans before God gave them the permission to go to war. Even then, there were limits to what could be done:

"Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors." (2:190)

Here, it is made clear that aggression is not allowed - only defensive war is permitted. Moreover, the purpose of war in Islam is NOT at all to kill non-Muslims or those who believe differently. In fact, the purpose is to protect religious freedom, be it for Muslims or non-Muslims:

"Permission (to fight) is given to those upon whom war is made because they are oppressed, and most surely Allah is well able to assist them; Those who have been expelled from their homes without a just cause except that they say: 'Our Lord is Allah.' And had there not been Allah's repelling some people by others, certainly there would have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques in which Allah's name is much remembered; and surely Allah will help him who helps His cause; most surely Allah is Strong, Mighty." (22:39-40)

So, you see, the purpose is to preserve houses of worship - churches, mosques, synagogues, temples - from being razed, and to defend an oppressed group or a persecuted group from an oppressor. Therefore, it is not only to defend Muslims, but any group that is treated unjustly - whether Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, etc.

The fact of the matter is that war is sometimes - in rare cases - necessary and the only viable option to promoting justice. You might ask, What about nonviolence? I would say that certainly nonviolent means is what we try first - and second, and third, and fourth - until we get to a point where the lives of a race or group of people are so endangered that war is better than persecution.

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:
Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: By Him in Whose hand is my life, the Son of Mary (may peace be upon him) will soon descend among you as a just judge. He will break crosses, kill swine and abolish Jizyah, and the wealth will pour forth to such an extent that no one will accept it.

Death to Appostles from BIBLE

In the Old Testament:

Deuteronomy 13:6-9 "If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying: Let us go and worship other gods (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other, or gods of other religions), do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people."

Deuteronomy 17:3-5 "And he should go and worship other gods and bow down to them or to the sun or the moon or all the army of the heavens, .....and you must stone such one with stones and such one must die."

2 Chronicles 15:13 "All who would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman."

In the New Testament by Jesus and Paul:

Matthew 15:1-9
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!"
3 Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
4 For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'
5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,'
6he is not to 'honor his father' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
7You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'"

There are few points to notice here:

1- Notice in verse 3, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for breaking the Commands of GOD Almighty.

2- In verse 4, he used the cursing of parents' punishment as an example. The context, however, is not limited to just this example!

3- In verses 7,8 and 9, he used a quote from the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament, to further prove that they are not following the Commands of GOD Almighty.

4- Jesus clearly had a problem with them not following the punishment of death for cursing the parents or any punishment of death that is commanded in the OT for this matter! In fact, Jesus himself said:

"Do not think that I [Jesus] have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (the Old Testament) until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-18)"

"Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 'The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.' (Matthew 23:1-3)"

This clearly means:

1- Jesus absolutely approved and commanded the following of the OT's Laws regarding apostates!

2- The fact he commanded death penalty for cursing the parents clearly proves that he also approves of killing apostates as clearly shown in the OT verses above!

Paul:

Let us look at Romans 1:20-32 (from the New Testament) "20. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
21. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools
23. and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
24. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.
25. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.
26. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.
27. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.
29. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,
30. slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;
31. they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
32. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them."

Also psychics must be put to death. Let us look at Leviticus 20:27 "And as for a man or woman in whom there proves to be a mediumistic spirit or spirit of prediction, they should be put to death without fail. They should pelt them to death with stones. Their own blood is upon them."

The above verses clearly show that the Bible doesn't tolerate apostates. Jesus did honor the Old Testament's laws and ordered his followers to follow the Old Testament until the day of Judgment:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (the Old Testament) until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-18)"

Christians always say as an excuse that an Old Testament law does not apply to them. According to Matthew 5:17-18, we clearly see that Jesus honored the Old Testament, and forced Christians to follow the unmodified laws of it that have not been replaced by newer ones in the New Testament. The Old Testament as we clearly see above orders the immediate killing of apostates/renegades. The New Testament as we also clearly see above, orders the death of the apostates/renegades. And according to Matthew 5:17-18 above, apostates/renegades in Christianity must be put to death simultaneously.

By the way, please visit: Christians are obligated to follow the Old Testament.

Also, during the middle centuries when the Church used to rule over everything, the minority Christians and the Christian Scientists were slaughtered and put to death by the majority ones just because the Priests and Ministers of the High Church decided to call as "heresies" or "apostates". The Bible does give clear authority to the Priests and Ministers to call someone an apostate:

"The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment. (1 Corinthians 2:15)"

Conclusion:

The Bible in both the Old and New Testaments command the killing of apostates, and those who disagree need to produce their proofs.

After all, the Medieval Churches during the middle centuries, who used to persecute minority Christians and Jews, were not deviants after all! They were simply following their bible; the book of women's vaginas and breasts taste like "wine".
