Distraught Saudi father disowns ‘stupid son’
ABHA: The father of an Al-Qaeda terrorist, Saeed Al-Shehri, who was formerly detained in Guantánamo Bay and then underwent a correction program in the Kingdom after which he fled to Yemen to join other militants, has spoken out against his son whom he described as stupid and disloyal to his family and nation.
“I wished I could kill him with my own hands after I found him deceiving me and shaming and humiliating my family, tribe and nation,” said Ali Jaber Al-Shehri. “He accused me of being an infidel before he left for Yemen.” Speaking to Al-Madinah newspaper, Ali, a retired military officer, said he has lost all hope in his son returning to the Kingdom to live a normal life after he fled to Yemen where he assumed the leadership of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
Saeed, who figured No. 31 in the Ministry of Interior’s most wanted list, is known as Abu Sufyan Al-Azdi among his fellow militants. He is now the deputy chief of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and recently issued an audio statement on the Internet threatening to take revenge against senior figures in the Kingdom.
Accompanying him in Yemen is his wife, Wafa Al-Shehri. This is Wafa’s third marriage. She was previously married to Saud Al-Qahtani, from whom she divorced, and then Abdul Rahman Al-Ghamdi, a militant who was killed in a shootout with Saudi security forces in Taif in 2005.
Abdullah Al-Asiri, the Saudi militant who blew himself up in a suicide bombing on Assistant Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Naif in August last year, tried to take advantage of the prince’s generosity and compassion by telling him that Wafa and her three children needed help in returning from Yemen. It was during the course of this conversation that Al-Asiri blew himself up.
Speaking about his son, Ali said he was a normal child and that he had memorized the Qur’an at a young age. He, however, dropped out of school after the fourth grade. “He has been successful in deceiving me. He went to fight in Afghanistan by telling me he was going there on a relief mission with the International Islamic Relief Organization-Saudi Arabia. This was after I told him he couldn’t go for jihad to Afghanistan. I told him to do the jihad of serving his parents,” he said, adding that his son has deeply offended his family, tribe, nation and religion, and the Kingdom’s rulers.
Ali said his son married Wafa (also known as Umm Hajir) and that the couple has one child, a girl. “Wafa has two children from her previous marriages and she has taken the children to Yemen without their father’s knowledge,” he added.
“How could a woman kidnap her children from her previous marriages and leave a paradise for hell. I have appealed to Saeed many times to surrender himself and return Wafa and the children to the Kingdom, but I haven’t been successful,” he said.
Saeed married Wafa without Ali’s approval or knowledge. “Sometime after the marriage, Wafa’s father called me to say his daughter was married to Saeed. I voiced my disapproval and told her father that he had done something wrong by allowing his daughter to marry a deviant and that I would not associate myself with him in any way,” said Ali.
“I am ashamed of his new position as the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula ... These deviant people are engaged in terrorism, and are threatening Muslims and their interests. These groups are instrumental in luring young men into a quagmire of ruin and darkness. I call on him to repent, return to the Kingdom and surrender himself,” he said.
“How can a man who has been subjected to inhumane treatment and torture in Guantánamo Bay repeat the same offenses after being released and given all opportunities to lead an upright life,” he added.
Ali said he has tried his best to convince him of his past mistakes. “I told him that the government has spent millions of riyals in helping him lead an upright life, that the government is giving him a monthly stipend of SR3,000 and helping him get married,” he said. “He apparently agreed to what I was saying and promised to lead a normal life and avoid extremism.
I asked him not to contact his old friends and burn all his mobile phone SIMs. I even threatened to kill him if I saw him with any of his old friends. He agreed to obey and promised me that he would lead a proper and righteous life,” he added.
Speaking about the time Saeed left for Yemen, he said, “I returned home in Al-Namas after visiting Khamis Mushayt and found he had left home. After four days, one of my sons in Riyadh telephoned to say that Saeed was in Yemen. It was a huge shock. He has not been in any contact with us. Since then I’ve only seen him on TV speaking about his evil ideas and plans.”
