I am attempting to learn the Arabic alphabet, but am unsure of what I should use to write with. I have attempted to write with a normal ball point pen but the letters do not look right.
What is the normal writing instrument for everyday Arabic script?
Are there different types of writing in common usage, not the formal artistic scripts, but what are used in daily life?

Asslam u laikum brother,
I do not think that there is any special instrument for writing arabic. You are feeling that way because it is just beginning. You will feel better insha Allah
Best of luck.

Salam,
The normal writing instruments for everyday Arabic are ball point pens !
Usually people starting arabic, have a very big writting, so don't worry about that

As Salaam Alaykum Brother,
Ink Pens with different shapes of nibs are used to get the the variable width in arabic/urdu alphabets.
These are available at stationary shops here in India.
I'm not sure where you can get those in the US.

Good point. It could be cleared up with a sticky post, communicating the intent for the forum.
