Hi, My name is Laura and I live in Canada. I recently returned from a month long trip from Egypt. I have fallen in love with your culture and am very interested in becoming Muslim. But there are two questions I have:

Do muslims believe in Evoulution?
Can I believe in other aspects of other faiths such as Budism (ie. Meditiation) or Paganism?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I would love to meet some new friends

I am glad you enjoyed your trip to Egypt, its such a beautiful country :)

If evolution means that humans evolved from apes, then no. Muslims do not believe in this. I dont believe in those Darwinian theories, plus many have shown that it has a lot of holes and problems, even though the theory has been forced onto school kids in the West.

Islam is a total and complete faith. It is unacceptable to believe in anything that can contradict the Islamic teachings. Islam can help you in all your life including the spiritual. There are so many uplifting aspects of Islam, for example the prayer is something that can help you relax and the beauty of the Quran especially when listening and reading makes one ponder about the universe and our life. :).

Another example...... if you have good Muslim friends, their love and their aid will really lift you. InshaAllah. All Muslims share a common brotherhood and we look out and care for one another. --------

We have other spiritual benefits and actions which make us better person, such as the pilgrimage to Makkah, where we worship God and wear Ihram (clothing which makes us equal with all people)....

There is Ramadan, the month of fasting which also is an act of worship for God.... this is a month where we contemplate life, the poor people and those Muslims who have the ability give charity.... after Ramadan there is an amazing celebration called Eid, where there is lots of nice food !

So as i mentioned above, Islam really does fill a lot of a persons life and soul. May Allah help us all with this. - So having something try to fill these voids is unecessary.

Islam doesnt ban different culture. Rather we accept people's differences. Race, social status mean nothing to us. Rather what matters is the belief in someones heart and the love they have for Islam. This again, we can not judge.

You could do Yoga or Kung Fu etc or anything that was based off some other faith etc, but it is important that you do not accept the belief system that goes with it. i.e. to believe in Karma, reincarnation..... So in Yoga, certain excercises are based on Hindu acts of worship, such as the Sun Salutation, where they would praise and worship the sun..

Allah is the creator of the sun, and only he is to be worshipped.

We must keep our Islamic beliefs pure. To worship God alone without associating any partners with him. So therefore, asking help from spirits, calling on the dead, worshipping other Gods, people, monkeys rats and other animals, mountains, trees, stones, rivers, is not allowed. And they will not be able to aid us at all.

Last of all, i just want to say that Islam is a very easy religion to follow. And INshaAllah, once you get a grasp of the basics, and see the significance of the 2 main unchanging sources of Islam, i.e. the Quran and the Sunnah (hadith sayings of the Prophet:saw:) you will understand how and why!

Hi Laura,

welcome to this site. As Mabsoot said muslims dont believe in evolution. We believe that Adam and Eve were created by God, and not just somehow came from monkeys.

concerning your question on meditation, anything within the rules of Islam would be allowed. So for example meditation, as in contemplation is a good thing.

As brother Ameer explained it. we don't accept that man came from Apes. Or that there is one ethnic group superior to other etc. in islam there is one mankind and no one is superior to other.
I studied some theories about this and i don't believe in this ideas. There are a lot of holes...
And if you want, what said science about the arrangment in the Universe and that water was the first element in life, i can say that islam join like this etc.
Allah says in Sourate the Prophets N°21 verse n°30
"Do not those who disbelieve see that the heavens and the earth were closed up, but We have opened them; and We have made of water everything living, will they not then believe?"

You say that we cant believ in evoloution from ape to man which i totally agree but what about how the earth was made, b/c i learnt at skool that it was created by a big explosion of obviously dust particles, this questions me if this is true (in physics) or if allah created the earth like that, like a bang, planted some plants and dinosaurs ordered a meteorite to kill the dinosaurs and then put humans on, do you think that the thoery of the big bang is true?

You're talking of the Red Shift effect in Physics right? how its proof that everything is expanding so must have been expanding for a long time..and how it must have been set off by an initial...force, yeh I think the Qur'an gives evidence for this particular point, Surah: 21. Al-Anbiyaa, Ayah 30:

أَوَلَمۡ يَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓاْ أَنَّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ ڪَانَتَا رَتۡقً۬ا فَفَتَقۡنَـٰهُمَاۖ وَجَعَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلۡمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىۡءٍ حَىٍّۖ أَفَلَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ

Some aspects of evolution are true. For example, we can see a caterpillar turn into a butterfly or a fertilized egg turn into a living baby.

The problem arises when evolutionary theorists look for ways to replace human beings. Remember they are just theorist, with no proof or evidence. These are desperate people trying to replace or get rid of God or the Creator. Most of them are atheists to begin with!

Some species evolve, but Man does not. We are created. The creation was created by the Creator. And if these theorist think humans were once monkeys, why are there still monkeys??

“And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth).

Thereafter We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman).

Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So Blessed is Allaah, the Best of creators” (23:12-14)

There is some evidence from the Quran to support the big bang theory:

"Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them (split asunder)? And We have made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" Quran 21:30

However, we muslims do not believe in "chance" ... Allah has created this world with a system and everything has got a purpose.

Hi Laura. We warmly wlecome you into our community. Let me quickly answer your 2 questions:
Do muslims believe in Evoulution?
We dont believe in the theory of evolution, for us this is just a theory, and no scientific book will ever mention it as the fact of evolution. As muslims we believe god almighty is the one responsible for creating this universe and human beings. Evolution is based on chance events leading to complexity, whereas we believe complexity cannot come from chance and rather it reflects a designer. ie god the creator.

Can I believe in other aspects of other faiths such as Budism (ie. Meditiation) or Paganism? As muslims we follow the teachings of the last and final prophet, and the last and final revalation ie final testiment, so those things from these other religions that match with the prophets teaching and god's book, we also believe and accept, however if not, then we dont follow it, and god almighty says believe in me and my messenger, so we are confident in following this path, and not in need for previous religious ideas/practises. Hope that answers your questions.
