I have got members of my family that feel one should not study things like law, psychology, etc and many of the ones that many of you have named in your posts, they feel that studying these so called secular degrees are of no benefit to the ummah. Mashallah it is amazing to see so many people with different degrees.
At the moment i am studying a BA degree with English and Sociology as my majors, and im working in a law firm, Inshallah i will complete my degree next year.

When I was younger, I studied as cook, after that had some business education for marketing and after that computer studies (layout of internet sites). In here it is just good to have many professionals - easy to get new job if economy situation goes bad in some field. Last I have been teacher, teaching my language to immigrants but without any education to it.
:SMILY149:
Next I will go to as advisor to local immigration office - thanks my good language skills and international experiences by human right matters.

WOW! So many accomplished brothers & sisters on this site....I am so proud of you all, subhan'Allah.
Lots of people in engineering, LOL.
My background is in Nursing.
I have a license to be a nursing aid, to work in a Hospice. Where people have 6 months or less to live. Sadly, I could not get a job at all due to to the recession. Now, the license has expired.
In 2011, I will be returning to school for my LVN (vocational nursing) license. Insha'Allah this time I will be able to get a job! This will allow me to work in more places...like Hospitals.
Assalaam walaikum.
Sister Alf I worked as a bereavement counselor at a hospice a million years ago. It was some of the best experiences I have had.
Insha'Allah you will do very well at school.
For those who want dua, Insha'Allah, I will make dua from the bottom of my heart.

well i finished high school in 2001 (i think lol)
i studied Office Administration and then completed a Legal Secretary Certificate III at Tafe as a traineeship so while i was working 5 days a week at a law firm.
also while working i completed Private Investigation Course which took 1 year part time night class. i came FIRST and got Distinctions in all my course.
i then worked at another law firm while looking for a job as an Investigator for an INsurance company doing Insurance Investigation claims or fraud investigation. it was hard to find a job because i was not experienced.
i met my husband and got engaged. he didnt want me to work as an investigator and asked me to study about the religion as it will benifet me more.
i started doing my own research and reading books on islam etc.
Last year i started my shariah course. unable to complete it because of my 2 kids they need constant attention. my son is going to private school this year inshallah, im looking at studying nursing to help children at local hospitals so i can get rewards from Allah because i heard doctors get good rewards or something.
but i'll try to complete my shariah course.

Salam Oualekoum Sisters and Brothers!!!
I've created this thread just to have a little overview of the different degrees or knowledge the members of this site have. I think some of you study law, science, medecine, mathematics, history, or religion (MashAllah) etc...
The Qu'ran is a incredible Book that deals with History, Law, Economics, Science, Geology, Biology, Sociology, Theology etc that's why I think our community must do the same. Allah wants us all, males and females, to seek knowledge, to learn, because the more we understand the world we live in, the more we know Allah, and the more we love Him INSH ALLAH!!!
So I'm going first :
I'm an Telecommunication Engineer, I started working a year ago after graduating with a master degree of science and telecommunication. I thank God for this.
May Allah guide us all.

History degree that I don't use.
I started out undecided, then was a journalism major for a year before I changed majors. I didn't like being told what to write and how to write it.
History was the only class that I didn't skip or sleep through, plus I only had to take one math class as a history major.

I do have to say how amazed I am that over the years this thread has continued as i started on page one a few minutes ago and my eyes bugged out when i saw the date..
I started out as a criminal studies major... had to leave before i could finish.... long story
went back... through the community college first and then was working on an english lit/russian studies dual major. However, it didnt start out that way.... it started out psych and philosophy.. then went to english and asian history then to english and russian.
I left school, due to reasons in part beyond my control ..... I want to go back. bad thing is. I was a second year senior so close in english and russian both, but its been so long outside the russian that i have to change that part.... and i have no desire to really use the english degree if i got it. ( sigh )
inshallah I will make it back but when i am not sure of. I am sure that Allah (swt) has a plan for me and i am trying to be somewhat patient while i try and find out what i can do.
I too love to learn obviously. i was already taking grad classes in english... the bad thing is, I am not working in any way in that field ... i work in a call center for child support... which is a good job..... but not what i want for my career...

I went to school to become a massage theropist(finished it), then medical assistant(didn't finish it. I couldn't get thru the material) and then to go into culinary(didn't finish it for financial reasons). I currently am privately studying, and I love studying religion(not just islam) and language (I'm addicted to the japanese and culture). one of the things I love to do is use my study of religion to further my(and others) understanding of my(or their) religion.
Currently I work at a place where many think it's haram. I started there when I was pagan, and they havefully accepted my conversion/reversion. that place is McDonalds(pray for me. I really need it)

My interest in psychology is in the areas of abnormal psychology and neuropsychology, for a broad understanding of these topics I would recommend 'Abnormal Psychology Perspectives' author D.J. Dozois and 'Cognitive Neuroscience' author M.T Banich & R.J Compton. I'm not too sure what to recommend for your interests on self-understanding tho. If you wish to learn about personality, perhaps look into personality inventories such as the Big 5 factors, Hexaco Model, and work on authoritarian personalities. Also, social psychology provides a number of theories to understand individual's/groups behaviour dependant upon the context.
I apologize for not being able to direct you to better sources for what you are looking for.

Salam,
But, Sister Apaa, doesn't Islam also say that we must seek knowledge? I suppose people choose to have an education because they need to pave their way in life, so they have a stable future, money-wise. You can still be a good Muslim and have a few qualifications behind you :)
Salam
Assalaam walaikum,
Yes, we must seek knowledge. But, we can not be in blind pursuit of useless knowledge.
There is nothing wrong with being sane. And knowledge does not have to be formal education. It is a luxury.
We need to remember knowledge can be passed on by elders. Craftsmen and farmers. We need to employ technology but we are forgetting how to toil.
All I was suggesting from you last post is not to belittle yourself. Seek knowledge..do not limit it to college.

Salaam.
Dear Believer1985, you must understand that Allah has created everyone for a purpose. First, to worship him only , and to seek as much Islamic education as possible. Then, what ever course of study you take up to become a professional in or, if you have not been written down to be a bookish person, there is always the vocational aspect of education to explore. Even if you are not inclined to take up vocational studies, there is still much that you are and can still be; eg, you are a daughter and you can aspire to be the BEST DAUGHTER any parent has ever known ( of course you must be within the boundaries of Islam). Then, as a Muslim woman, you must know that marriage is half of your Deen. Here too, you can aspire to be the BEST MUSLIM WIFE ( Muslim women are told in the Holy Qur'an to marry Muslim men); and, Inshah Allah, the BEST MUSLIM MOM. My dear sister, the main thing to remember always is that you MUST ALWAYS put Allah first and foremost in your life.
Sister , with regard to your educational status which seems to be weighing heavily on your mind, you need to understand that whatever is written down for you, you will get and whatever is not for you, you will never get. You must not despair. Before our birth, our provisions are written down for us and regardless of who may try to prevent it, Allah has written it and He gives it. And what has not been written for us, regardless of what we or others do, we will never get it. Remember too, that when one door shuts another always opens. You just have to stop looking at the shut door and turn around to see the open one. Then again, as a teacher, I come into contact with what educators refer to as the ''late bloomers''. In Islam, Allah tells us to be patient and to persevere with constant prayers. Never give up. You may very well better understand now what you did not understand in High School and here is your chance to reopen your mind and re-explore your High School syllabus with an adult's eye. You would be amazed at how much you can understand now. You can check into classes for adults if you wish.
Can you picture a world where everyone is a doctor or a lawyer? That would be most devastating! Allah has created us to be inter-dependent upon each other. As much as we need doctors and lawyers, we also need farmers, fishermen, carpenters, plumbers, florists, caterers etc. Not to imply that these professionals do not have education... it's just that their knowledge is more hands on instead of having to study for years to acquire a piece of paper that acknowledges their qualifications. Please, do not despair...just try something different...try thinking out of the box and make du'a before starting a new venture. Oh, and never look at what someone else has and grieve over it. You too are special and can achieve goals in your life, with Allah's swt Grace and Mercy. Go ahead, just ask Him :tti_sister:
Remember though, you must be willing to work hard and make some sacrifices if you want to succeed. Prayers alone will not suffice. Allah swt says that when His servants come one hand-span towards Him, He comes an arm's length towards His servants. Further, Allah swt says that He will not change the condition of a people until they themselves change their condition. Basically, you have to be willing to work hard and ask Allah for His help in order to effect change in your life.
Ma Salaam.
Your sister in Deen.
