BANJUL (AFP)

Eccentric Gambian President Yahya Jammeh threatened to behead gays unless they left the country, according to press reports.

"The Gambia is a country of believers... sinful and immoral practices (such) as homosexuality will not be tolerated in this country," the president told a crowd at a political rally on May 15, local journalists told AFP.

He went on to say he would "cut off the head" of any gay person caught in The Gambia.

The anti-gay campaign continued in the Gambian pro-government media this week with the Daily Observer publishing a virulent editorial.

"We have said it before and we will say it again. This is a Muslim and Christian country. Both the Koran and the holy Bible condemn homosexuality -- pure and simple," the paper wrote on Monday May 19.

British gay rights group Outrage said in a reaction Thursday that the Gambian leader's comments came as no surprise.

"Jammeh has a long history of homophobia," spokesman Peter Tatchell said.

"If he tries to carry out these threats, international aid donors are likely to withdraw their support, and foreign tourists will stay away in droves, thereby damaging the Gambian economy," he added.

The tourism industry is vital to Gambia's economy as the West African nation lacks other natural resources.

Jammeh drew condemnation from African AIDS groups after he claimed in January to have found a "miracle" treatment for HIV/AIDS.

The method was based on medicinal plants and a Quranic verse. All participants were ordered to give up their antiretroviral drugs.

Salaam,

This man sounds NUTS! Just reading about his cure and demand that AIDS patients give up their medication tells me he is ignorant beyond belief. But what does he expect by now stating he will have homosexuals beheaded? He feels he has the right to kill some for one particular people for comitting sin? What about all the other sins? Like, you know, judging?

What does the Qur'aan and Sunnah say should be done with such people?

After that, none of our opinions matter.

the president of gambia has good points and bad points. which one should i bring up first? hmmmm. well, i think that it's good that a leader of a nation calls people to account for their actions. there is nothing wrong with him saying that homosexuality is a sin.

i just don't agree with the whole beheading thing. but it's good that he's taking a stand. but i just worry that he may get the people so worked up with his speech that people will become vigilantes and start attacking people.

:salam2: I do agree with your opinion. We should first refer to what the Qur'aan and Sunnah say about this matter and then pass our judgments. Here is what the Prophet ( PBUH), his Companions and scholars said about homosexuals.

al-Tirmidhi (1456), Abu Dawood (4462)and Ibn Maajah (2561) narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.”. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

Ahmad (2915) narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “May Allaah curse the one who does the action of the people of Loot, may Allaah curse the one who does the action of the people of Loot,” three times. This was classed as hasan by Shu’ayb al-Arna’oot in Tahqeeq al-Musnad.

The Sahaabah were unanimously agreed on the execution of homosexuals, but they differed as to how they were to be executed. Some of them were of the view that they should be burned with fire, which was the view of ‘Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) and also of Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him), as we shall see below. And some of them thought that they should be thrown down from a high place then have stones thrown at them. This was the view of Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him).

Some of them thought that they should be stoned to death, which was narrated from both ‘Ali and Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them).

After the Sahaabah, the fuqaha’ differed concerning the matter. Some of them said that the homosexual should be executed no matter what his situation, whether he is married or not. Some of them said that he should be punished in the same way as an adulterer, so he should be stoned if he is married and flogged if he is not married. Some of them said that a severe punishment should be carried out on him, as the judge sees fit.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah be pleased with him) discussed this issue at length, and he mentioned the evidence and arguments of the fuqaha’, but he supported the first view. This is explained in his book al-Jawaab al-Kaafi’ li man sa’ala ‘an al-Dawa’ al-Shaafi, which he wrote to deal with this immoral action. We will quote some of what he said:

Because the evil consequences of homosexuality are among the worst of evil consequences, so its punishment is one of the most severe of punishments in this world and in the Hereafter.

If you need more details or to go back to the Quranic ayahs stipulating this punishment, you can refer to Islam Q&A

In brief, beheading homosexuals is one form of execution, so I think the man is courageous enough to put into effect the " Hudud " that Allah swt has stipulated in the Holy Quran and in the Prophet's ( PBUH) Sunnah.:salam2:

Current law in Gambia says about this matter as:

Gambia
According to the criminal code from 1965, § 15, Offences against Morality Act, Article 144: homosexuality is an "unnatural offence" and is illegal. According to Article 145 a prison sentence for perpetrators can be for up to 7 years. Article 146 states those who commit "unnatural acts" with anyone under the age of 14 years can also be imprisoned for up to 7 years. Article 147 states homosexual acts, even in privacy are considered acts of gross indecency and can be punished with imprisonment for up to 5 years.

:salam2: sister do you know the story about those who practised such thing at the time of the prophet Lot on how they got punished?and like 2-3 days ago I was listening to this Sheikh and he was saying that ALLAH has said that if this Ummah(Muhammad's Ummah that we're all in now) are practising such thing and He doesn't punish us like that it's because of our beloved prophet Muhammad(peace and blessings upon him)
so,I think as a muslim and head of a country he has rights to threaten people doing this in his country so that they might not get in his country if they don't want to be beheaded and by the way it's not tourists or watever that will develop his country,ALLAH is ar-razak(the provider)
If I'm wrong sister I'm sorry and I don't intend to be against you lol

It's on ibn Majah 3561 not 2561. Shy Hijabi was right, to me the Gambia President must BEHEADED those Qaumi Luuth and the Kafirun Murtadin also must meet the same punishment from his Syari'ah based government, may Allahu Ta'ala make it happen, He is the helper of all needs. Alhamdulillaahi rabbil 'aalamiin.
