U.S. says Syria had nuclear reactor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday released photographs of what it said was a Syrian nuclear reactor built with North Korean help, in an effort to pressure Pyongyang to fully disclose its nuclear activities.

Israel destroyed the reactor in a September 6 air strike that was initially shrouded in secrecy out of what U.S. officials said was fear that public discussion could prompt Syria, which has long supported militant Palestinian groups, to retaliate.

"We are convinced, based on a variety of information, that North Korea assisted Syria's covert nuclear activities both before and after the reactor was destroyed," said a U.S. intelligence document released to reporters.

The document said the administration had concluded that the suspected reactor would have been able to produce plutonium for nuclear bombs and was "nearing operational capability in August 2007" -- the month before the Israeli strike.

The United States did not give Israel any "green light" to strike the suspected nuclear reactor, a U.S. official said.

Syrian Ambassador Imad Moustapha denied the U.S. charge. "This is a fantasy," he told CNN after being briefed by the U.S. State Department on the U.S. intelligence.

"I hope the truth will be revealed to everybody," he said. "This will be a major embarrassment to the U.S. administration for a second time -- they lied about Iraqi WMDs (weapons of mass destruction) and they think they can do it again."

Washington's main justification for the 2003 U.S.-led invasion was that Iraq had stockpiles of WMDs. Such weapons have not been found.

NORTH KOREAN, SYRIAN IN PHOTOGRAPH?

The roll-out of the intelligence on Syria was in some ways reminiscent of the choreographed presentation of U.S. prewar suspicions on Iraq. It included a half dozen closed-door briefings to members of Congress, a White House statement, and then a presentation to reporters.

In the briefings to lawmakers and reporters, U.S. officials produced before-and-after aerial photographs of the suspected reactor in eastern Syria as well as detailed interior images that they said showed key parts of its components.

One photograph showed what a U.S. intelligence official described as a senior North Korean nuclear expert standing beside a key Syrian atomic official inside Syria.

Senior U.S. intelligence officials said the suspected reactor closely resembled the Yongbyon nuclear facility in North Korea, which tested a nuclear device in October 2006.

The U.S. charges come several months after North Korea missed a December 31 deadline to make a declaration of its nuclear programs in a deal over its nuclear ambitions with the United States, Russia, China, Japan, and South Korea.

Under the deal North Korea promised to disclose all of its nuclear programs and, ultimately, to abandon them and any nuclear weapons it may have.

"We hope that the fact that we have had such detailed understanding of this activity ... will convince them that there is no point in trying to cover up not only proliferation activity but (uranium) enrichment activity and plutonium activity," a senior U.S. official told reporters.

The United States hopes airing its suspicions about Syria will garner more international support to isolate Iran, which Washington accuses of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is designed to produce electricity.

"One of our concerns is, is there (an Iranian) connection with North Korea? If there is, we don't know it," said a senior U.S intelligence official. "But is there something going on there that resembles this program that we are talking about in Syria - in Iran. That's a very large concern of ours."

Another official said Washington hopes the disclosures will persuade other nations "to join us in pressuring Syria to change its policies" toward Iraq, Lebanon and Palestinian groups that have launched attacks on Israel.

The United States accuses Syria of allowing insurgents to cross its borders into Iraq and of continuing to interfere in Lebanon despite the end of its military occupation.

It was not clear what effect the disclosures would have on North Korea, which was told about the presentations in advance. Nor was it clear whether they would ease concerns in Congress that the United States may have struck a bad bargain with North Korea.

U.S. President George W. Bush has lost the support of some fellow Republicans on the North Korea deal, but the Democrats who control Congress by and large appear to be more supportive of the path he is following.

Rep. Peter Hoekstra, the top Republican on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said after a briefing on the issue that the administration had lost the trust of many lawmakers.

"This administration has no credibility on North Korea," he told Reuters. "A lot of us are beginning to become concerned that the administration is moving away from getting a solid policy solution to 'let's make a deal' -- regardless of how bad it may be."

This is SO FUNNY!!!!! Because Syria is a very poor country. Their army is perhaps one of the most poorly equipped in the World. They are under many sanctions because of the US.

War mongers have no thoughts for the innocent people who live there. For wars always hurt innocent people.

If these leaders have issues, they should get in a boxing ring and let their steam out, dont let the innocent and beautiful children of the world get hurt.

And their wars have contribute to shortage of food in the world and in America. And because of their wars their economic has fallen down ever in histroy. Who is going to take them seriously? I hope rest of the world's citizens and leaders aren't as gullible and stupid like American citizens are. (majority of Americans are pretty ignorant when it comes to politics and international affairs, hence the leaders can "bushwack" them as much as they like).

I am sorry to say this but that is uncalled for. Not all Americans what you claim are; I have met some of them and I have heard what they say. You implying that all of them are ignorant is just naive. I'm sorry brother but my advice do not judge one person for a whole clan, nation, or a tribe.

Saalam,

Yes my comments were a bit strong and offensive, I apologize, however I did put in parenthesis (majority).
I'm not sure where you live, but I do live in USA and I do talk to many friends and colleagues about politics and current events. I stand by my statement because of what I observed and because the silence of the majority of the public to stand up to the government. There were huge anti-war protest leading up to the Iraq war, however those protesters represented the minority when you take the entire population into consideration.
To this day Nearly 25-30% American population believes Saddam had WMD's, links with Al Qaeda, and World Trade Center.... That is shocking to me.
Think about the pre-war development, the public as a whole are very patriotic hence they back the government when it comes to critical issues like war and international politics. They confuse being patriotic with "love" of government, When, clearly there is a distinction.
It is very easy for the government to manipulate public opinion.
Example : This recent NY Times article is a great example.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/washington/20generals.html?ref=opinion

Take a look at John McCain, he repeatedly speaks of Al-Qaeda and Iran.(when the two are infact hostile)
As sad as it is, this type of "soundbites" one evening news (where most Americans get their information from) can and do greatly influence publics perception of things.

http://therealnews.com/web/index.php?thisdataswitch=0&thisid=1268&thisview=item&renewx=2008-04-04+09%3A55%3A09

Another example as to keep the public in the dark.

Yes I did make a general statement, however I did say "majority" and not the entire population.

I won't even get into how the public (majority) was kept in the dark leading up to the Iraq war, and how the Bush administration manipulated the public opinion by spreading disinformation. (The examples are too many, however if you want me to make a post you're more then welcome to ask and I will make a detail post presenting my argument).

Wylaikum,

Shoaib

Just in case if you're wondering. No I'm no anti-American, people are too quick to label, however I'm strongly against American foreign policy. I see it as foolish and counter-productive, hence I was very sad when Ron Paul didn't get elected :(
One can be a real patriot without loving the government.
My loyalty lies within the constitution not a cowboy president or his open gun foreign policy.

As Salamu Alekum

Actually brother there ain't any lesson to learn... Mind you aren't assuming that they are doin' what they are doin' for the good of anyone? no bro, not even their own people.. I've read a couple of articles about that issue... what I came out with is that Bush is working to achieve two goals; the first of which and the more serious, is that to realize these relegious beliefs or(needs) of its party..., um, I'm not sure 'n can't remember, but it was something like preparing the earth for the return of Jesus Christ (pbuh) in israel, by destroying its arab enemies, or something like that.., anyways it's meant to weaken and destroy the arabs and muslims, so that they can't rise up again by any mean.., see, first baghdad the old capital of Caliphate, passing through Afghanistan, and indirectly through Kuwait, Sudan, Somalia, Lebanon, etc., and now ending in Syria, damascus the second capital of Caliphate, and may be soon they'll come to Cairo (may Allah forbid). The second and far less important aim is the oil reserves found in Iraq; petroleum and money, plus of course these military bases they wanna (or being!) built to take over the area, and the potential dangers of Russia and China.

So, what's the lesson they should have learnt? they'r doing well so far in their plans. And if it weren't for the firm resistance of our sincere brothers there (NOT those of Al Qaeda), may be it'd have been much more worse, may Allah give them strength and power to force these occupiers out after causing them so great losses.

Allah Hafez

Wassalam Alekum

:salam2:
Jordanian newspaper Al-Arab Al-Youm reported today, through sources that an American message leaked by Egypt to Syria shows that the United States is ready to launch a broad military operation against Syria if it insists on its position on the Lebanese crisis and this is the real reason behind the deployment of “USS Cole” in front of the Syrian - Lebanese waters

The source said that the official announced reason of Condoleezza Rice’s visit to Egypt is to push the Palestinian - Israeli peace process forward but the real reason is to explain the American military actions and the presence of the American ships to the Egyptian leadership.

Update

This is reported today “US waived congressional restriction on Egypt aid” … which says it all.
CAIRO (Reuters) - The Bush administration has released $100 million in military aid to Egypt after telling the U.S. Congress the money was necessary for national security reasons.

At a joint news conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Cairo, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters she had waived the congressional restrictions that had withheld the amount.

"I have exercised on behalf of the United States the waiver in terms of Egyptian assistance ... The Bush administration sought to have that flexibility. We believe that this relationship with Egypt is an important one and that the waiver was the right thing to do," Rice said.

Congress had withheld the sum until the administration certified Egypt had done enough to protect the independence of the judiciary, curb police abuses and put a stop to arms smuggling from Egypt to Gaza.

But it also gave the administration an option to waive the restrictions "in the national security interest of the United States."

Hamas took control of Gaza in June, prompting Israel to tighten its military and economic cordon around the coastal territory. But Israel said in December that Egypt was doing a "terrible" job of stopping arms smuggling to Gaza through the Sinai peninsula.

In turn Egypt accused Israel of encouraging pro-Israeli groups in the United States to lobby members of the U.S. Congress to the detriment of Egyptian interests, specifically by persuading Congress to withhold the aid.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak accused Israel of fabricating evidence to implicate Egypt and Aboul Gheit threatened diplomatic reprisals against the Jewish state.

Rice added: "I have said to the foreign minister even today the importance the United States attaches to democracy and reform in Egypt and the importance that we attach to progress on those fronts. But yes, I have exercised the waiver."

The U.S. administration has gradually softened criticism of Egypt's rights record in the years since 2005, and analysts say an easing of U.S. public pressure on Egypt has given the state a freer hand over the past year to act against critics in the run-up to an eventual transition of power from Mubarak who, at 79, has been in power for 26 years.

Rice arrived in the region on Tuesday to try to persuade Israelis and Palestinians to quickly resume U.S.-sponsored peace talks suspended over a recent Israeli offensive.

I agree with you brother Mabsoot. America has become a fool. And then they wonder why Mujahid attack US soldeirs? Now, ask yourself that question. Why DO you think they do so? At the beginning of the war, the real period of the search for WMDs lasted for only 30 days. After the 30 days, the serachwas over, they dound none, BUT THEY KILLED 60,000 ARAQIS!!!!!!!!!

FOR ONLY 30 DARN DAYS! AND DO YOU KNOW HOW THOSE INNOCENT ARAQIS DIED? BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS COMING INTO PLACES LIKE HOMES AND MASJIDS, MASSACRING ALL THE PEOPLE WHEN THEY WERE IN SALAT, AND WHAT? NO ONE EXPECTS US MUSLIMS TO SAY SOMETHING?

LET'S SAY IF I SHOT A JEWISH OR CHRISTIAN BABY(no offense, it's jsut an example). AND THEN THEIR FATHER AND BROTHERS CAME TO KILL ME, WOUDLN'T EVERYONE SAY "OH YES, YOU DESERVE TO TAKE REVENGE ON HIM!" SO WHY DO KAFIRS THINK THAT IT CAN'T GO FOR MUSLIMS?!!

Assalamu Alykum, May Allah Ta Alla bless the Mujahid and the Muslims who have taken Shuhadah, and may he make those who are patient (waiting to become martyerded) to be able to make more good deeds in their life, in order that they can further please Allah TA Alla, Ameen.
