George W Bush may be backed by Christian fundamentalists but in his home state of Texas, Islam is the latest big draw.
Eric was a Baptist preacher before he became a Muslim 14 years ago. Now he prays five times a day – even in the middle of watching a football game. His wife, Karen, also a convert, is covered from head to toe in the traditional Muslim Clothes. Islam, says Eric, ‘is everything I wanted Christianty to be’. His mother has found it hard to come to terms with her son’s conversion and believes he will return to the Christan faith: ‘Then he will be a dynamic preacher.’ Eric says: ‘Maybe some day she’ll embrace Islam.’

Women are also becoming followers of Islam. Yasmine (previously Mindy) arranged a marriage for herself and has three children. Islam, she says is ‘the solution to a lot of the prevailing evils: drugs, adultery, fornication…’ Converts often see the religious laws more clearly than those who have been brought up as Muslims and Yasmine can spot a mistake at 20 paces. She believes that she has a unique opportunity to help people who are born into the religion get back to the fundamentals.
Catherine has been a Muslim for two weeks. She came from a privileged background – private school followed by a career in PR. Now the established Muslim women guide her through the purification rituals as she washes before prayer and removes her nail varnish.
David is the only white Muslim in his little town on Route 66. He believes his new religion makes him a better American and, far from undermining liberties, gives the individual more rights. He had an arranged marriage and his wife, who was born a Muslim, was shocked by the strictness with which he insists they live their lives. His family – a white man with his wife and daughter dressed in their hijabs (headscarves) –are stared in the streets and supermarkets of their one-horse town.
There are 400,000 Muslims in Texas alone and Islam is the fastest growing religion in the USA. Since 9/11 there have been more converts to Islam than ever. Eric believes that people are trying to understand Muslims and want to learn about their religion. Yasmine says: ‘America should not be afraid. If it would be better Muslims were the majority. If a child asks me: “Who made this leaf?” I say, “Allah. Allah made everything.”’

MORE INFO:
Five months before their marriage, Karen Meek's fiancé told her that he was becoming a Muslim. Ms. Meek, an atheist, was taken aback.
"I thought he was being brainwashed into something," she said. "All of a sudden he stopped drinking alcohol. He wanted to pray every day. He stopped eating pork."
For months, Eric Meek, a lapsed Baptist, had studied Islam without telling her. Now, when he went to work, Ms. Meek poured over his books and videos, trying to understand his faith.
She never expected to be attracted to Islam.
"I grew up thinking religion was ridiculous," said Ms. Meek, 33, of Lewisville. "I didn't believe in God. I had no idea how the universe was created and, frankly, didn't care."
She said Islam had a logic to it that she couldn't resist.
"Coming from an atheist background, I had an easier time accepting Islam than a Christian because I didn't have to unlearn or give up any beliefs," she said.
After getting married, she prayed for the first time while her husband was at work. She learned how from a book.
"Until this point, I had done everything privately, without telling him," she said. "I did not want to join a religion just because he did. I wanted to discover it on my own."
She and her husband began meeting with other Muslims to study the Quran, the holy book of Islam. Eventually, she made her profession of faith.
Her choice of religions stunned her parents.
"One day she came and she wearing a scarf and a dress down to her ankles," said her father, Ray Allred of Carrollton. "I was shocked."
He said he was estranged from his daughter for a time because of her religion. They're close now, though he fears for her safety since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"You want to love your child, but when they do something so foreign to you, it's very difficult," he said. "I'd give anything if she hadn't adopted this religion."
Those comments were echoed by Jane Barrett of Flower Mound, who's Ms. Meek's mother. She said she especially dislikes the hijab, or head covering, that her daughter wears.
"Karen is such a pretty girl with beautiful hair," she said.
Ms. Meek said she understands. After becoming a Muslim, it took her many months to adopt Islamic dress.
"I would wear the hijab places where people didn't know me," she said and laughed. Now, she wears it all the time -- even to work, where she is an accounting clerk for a restaurant chain.
She said embracing Islam has caused her to see life in a new way.
"Going from not believing in God to believing in God is amazing," she said. "Islam opened my eyes to so many things I had taken for granted, mostly that life is a gift."

Allah (SWT) did not create this world randomly, every thing in it has an orbit or a path, and this path should lead us to Allah (SWT) (The Noor). Thanks for Allah (SWT) for sending us The Map (The Noble Quraan), & Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) as an explainer & guider in this world, to show us the right path (his Sunnah) that leads to wide & deep ocean of Noor (ALLAH) SWT, which is full of precious & valuable things of this world & hereafter.

Hi everyone! Big Salam to all!
This is Katherine from the video.
Well after 3 years of this video being made, I have the courage to come out and correct the media's portrayal of me. They so misrepresented me. When I did this video I was was a muslim for about 5 months. They started filming in August 2003 and again another shoot in October 2003. I converted to islam in June 2003. I just started to desire to cover then in public in October. So when they filmed me in the first rounds, I was not covered. So please forgive me for that.
Also I would like to say, I said alot more important things they the way they portrayed me. I actually come from a middle class family...not upper class as they said. I did go to a nice college but only because my dad was smart enough to save money for his daughter. I had a special talent in art so there were not very many good christian schools in the USA I could go to. So I ended up going to TCU....and this is also where I learned about islam from my religion professor, Dr. Saddique (he was a muslim too).
Oh and those tennis lessons....I paid for that...just because I was trying to find a fun way to lose weight....I did not have tennis lessons all my life! My sisters was doing it also for exercise and she encouraged me to do the same. SINCE THEN, I have lost weight, about 30 pounds, humduallah! All that bowing and praying helps your weight too! I was really upset when they did the part with me about the finger nail polish. It made me looks so like stupid...I mean that is just a minor thing about wudu in Islam for women...but I wish they showed the other stuff I talked about in my journey...like where I learned about islam and the first mosque I went to.
Currently, what is going on with me is I am just now finishing my second degree in education. I hope inshallah I will be teaching next year. I am married now for 2.5 years. No Children yet...but I and my husband are up for them now...please make dua for us to allow allah to grant us good children! My husband and I are involved in plenty of dawa activities at our mosque and the public. Please don't hesitate to post a message to me if you have any questions about islam. I currently work directly with all the new muslims in dallas.
Sincerely,
Katherine

Wa alaykum Salam Wa RAhmatullah,
Dont wory sister, Im sure nobody thought bad of you for anything. Alhamdulilah, infact we are proud of you and it is great that you came to Islam. The video is great alhamdulilah, and it is good way for people to see how Muslims live.
The tennis lessons and your background etc as mentioned in the video did not make any difference. I guess because it is about yourself you see it in a different light! You came across as down to earth and humble, as the rest of the Muslims in the video did. Walhamadulilah.
Anyway, welcome to the site sister, may Allah bless you and the rest of your family.

A very interesting video. What I find suprising is how many converts in the US wear Niqaab -
To anyone who watches this video and is not Muslim - please note the lady prays with her face covered - this is only because she is been filmed and men will watch the documentary. When she normally prays, her face will be uncovered

Asalam alaikum. i am new and i am amazed with your great deal of effort. You becoming a Muslim is the best goal you probably have ever accomplished. This achievement is greater than the world, and then dragging your family into it, now that justifies you as a great example to the American community. i know it might be difficult for people or friends to look at you and your family the same, but later on you will forget about it. You and your family will walk with your head held high to the sky with pride and I promise you that there will be no regrets. May Allah protect you and your family. peace

Waalaikumsalam katherine.... i'm Nasrullah Wong or Wilson from malaysia.... i''m very happy to see more and more western people convert into islam. People here usually thought that western people are cruel, corrupted, invading others, injustice, double standard and so on (maybe big influence from crusade)...but when i watched those movie especially americans converted... wow.. Subhanallah... i almost couldn't believe it..... It is something weird and suprise feeling raised in my heart, but at same time i feel happy to see them testify the syahadah.
You've made the right choice Katherine. Many kafirs or non-muslim do not aware what is the real beauty of a woman. If a girl is example like a diamond, surely people will take very good care of it to maintain its shiness and beauty. This same goes to when muslim women wear hijab. Because their body parts are not so easily being exposed to guys, only husband and family can have the privilege....so this makes them feel more precious, well-pampered, just like the very pure diamond.... For a woman, the real beauty comes from intelligence....not body. because body only empty shell but intelligence powers the civilization.
Islam has put women to very high status. Even Allah has commanded men to protect women, to love them, and being leader to them. It is always not an easy task to bear the responsibility being as a leader of another, and if husband fails to lead he is sinful. Because women are mother, they give birth to everyone of us....they experienced the most painful moment when they delivered us. Rasullullah Muhammad S.A.W has onced said that we love our mother 3 times more than our father...... In the malay word saying: "Heaven is under the feet of mother".....

I am sory My English is very bad.

Sincerely,
Katherine
Assalamu Alaikum Katherine,
I was very happy to read about your update. I am a teacher myself and I hope you will be one soon inshalla. I am glad you pointed out that the video was made in 2 parts. That explains a lot of gaps in the filming. I would love to hear about your conversion. Have you ever written about it?

My everlasting congratulations to these folks from texas. It is pretty amazing that these folks found the right way to reach their Allah. Just want to know if there is a friendly preaching system to help my friends with questions. thank you
I don't know about the people in the video, but there really isn't anyone else in my area. Where I live there are other other people who call themselves Muslim but they kinda lean towards the Nation of Islam, primarily a cult around Elijah Muhammed, and they don't like white people very much.

Since Adam, Abraham, and so, Islam always existed!! Sounds weird but it's true! God sent many prophets but always human beings either killed them or denied their message or changed their message when they become popular, powerful in order to accomodate for their interests and manipulate and control the masses.
Coran is the word of God that didn't change and was not altered. Prophet Mohamed (SAWS) is the last of the prophets and with him lays the very word of god, the coran.
If you are not Muslim, put all your knowledge apart, inherited religious education (that you did not choose!) or your believes aside, then you open your mind, your IQ and your heart and then read the coran (in English, it exists) and analyze, think of it. Then and only then, I think you might discover the inner faith, that god sent Mohammed with the help of Gabriel to deliver again the message and to protect it for ever.
Then read about Mohammed (SAWS) teaching and you will see how righteous, peaceful, guided, merciful he was.
You know what's the stake of all this? When we die what will happen after? That's the question?? The key to this is submission to god through Mohammed (SAWS) teachings

thank you for those posts on new muslims , mashaalla
i always get inspired to be a better muslim from just reading there stories
we who are born muslims sometimes take our religion for granted, those who have been on the other side of the fence seem to look at it in a more practical way, i think we should try and remove iur cultures from taking islam backward and really concentrate on the sunna and the sharia
inshallah all muslims from different culture will see themselves as muslims first and their differences second, it is from those same differences that we can learn from each other
jazaka allahu kheir for those posts

Assmlkm :salam2: Dear Khaterine,
Alhamdullilah that Allah swt has shown you the way. I pray that Allah shall fulfilled your wish. Regret not if your wish is not happening, as there is always reason for everything that Allah gives or doesn't give. We human most of the time are limited by the capacity of our thought and knowledge to understand the reasons. Allah never failed in His promises.
Alhamdullilah, praise to Allah and He whom the praises all be, that you became Muslim through knowledge and the Noor (Light) that Allah swt has given you, compared to me and many of us who are borned Muslims. Many of us borned Muslims do not have or search for such knowledge. We learn Islam like a parrot and most of the time imitate what our parents and society do. Sadly some of us borned Muslims go even to the extent of fighting openly against Islam and some dare to declare Murtad. We seldom be thankful to Allah swt for making us Muslims and take everything for granted. Worst when we confined Islam as if belongs to only us the borned Muslims and many times we misrepresent and misinterpreted Islam. Some of us twist the words of Allah swt to fulfill our own worldly desire.
I am telling you this so that you would not be suprised if you were to meet some us especially if you visit Muslim society in Muslims dominated country like Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and even Middle East Countries.
We the borned Muslims have to learned a lot from people like you who found Islam through the knowledge and hidayah (guidance) of Allah swt. We are the one who should be reverting or converting whereas you have found the light and it is so bright that you can see very clearly. We are still in the dark for some of us, and always get loss along the way.
You definitely could play a bigger roles to help your borned Muslims brothers and sisters, who especially has lost their way.

May Allah guide Americans, Brits, Frech, Russian, Latin, Asian and African poeples to Huda and following the Sunna of the Prophet (pease be upon him).

We need someone to give a talk about Islam at vanderbilt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
assalamualaikum sister Katherine,
I am a muslim but im not an american. I study in america for about 4 years in mechanical engineering, at Vanderbilt University, nashville, tennessee.
We are here, in vanderbilt, always have some conflicts with the speechers or panels that were invited from outside to talk about the islam, but not the good side of islam. This cause people here not to really understand what islam is.
Currently, an atheist, named Ayan Hirsi Ali, has given a talk about Islam and The West. She told the people that Islam leads to facism and violence, no protection against women and not supporting democracy. We, the muslims community here, are were not comfortable with what she said about us and about Islam.
All we need is someone that can give a talk here to help people, especially in Nashville, to better understand Islam, the way it is.
We before, the muslim organization, invited the famous british journalist that has been converted to Islam few years ago named Yvonne Ridley to give a talk. Lots of people attend the talk, mostly are Christian Americans. It is a good thing to promote islam, and we, even deliver a free copy of Quran to all that attend.
We hope that muslims out there would ready for da'wa and can give a good talk to the americans about Islam.
If you interesteed in giving a speech here at Vanderbilt, just contact me at:

Yes, what dunno said is right and every Muslims knows and this is a grace from Allah SWT who forgives everything before Islam.
Omar Ibnul-Khattab, who was the 2nd Caliph after the Prophet SAWS and the Prophet Muhammad SWAS said that if there was a Propeht after him, he would be Omar.
Can you believe what this great man did before Islam??
He buried his own daughter alive, which was a tradition of Jahiliaya (Arab before Islam).
Nevertheless, Allah made him a great man is Islam.

It is the sword of intellect. The sword that conquers the hearts and minds of people. The Quran says in Surah Nahl, chapter 16 verse 125:
Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord
with wisdom and beautiful preaching;
and argue with them in ways that are
best and most gracious.

I am also currently expecting twins in October, Humdullah! We are suppose to have 2 boys. So far we are going to name them Jonah and Noah. Please pray for us in a safe delievery of our little boys. Who knows....they could be the next great imams in the USA! Inshallah!

About Oneness of God/Allah
Monotheism is the essence of Islam. To understand the purity and uniqueness of Islam, one must first study its concept of monotheism.
First, Muslims recognize that God alone is Divine, and that no entity nor being shares any of His powers or rights. "God created all things and He is the agent upon which all things depend." [39:62].
Second, and this is what distinguishes Islam from other faiths. Muslims must not violate the oneness of God in their worship and devotion. There is no praying to, nor through an intermediary, whether it be a prophet, priest, saint or idol. The Prophet made it clear to Muslims that there can only be one object of their worship-God/Allah. There can be no believing in horoscopes, and no fearing "unlucky" numbers. One should only pray to God, put all hope in God, love Him before all else, and only fear the wrath of God. "Do not worship besides God that which cannot help nor harm you." [21:66].
Third, Islamic monotheism also includes recognizing the perfect names and attributes of God, which He gave himself in the Qur'an. He is Ar-Rahman, the All-Merciful, He created beings in need of that mercy, namely, humans. He is Al-Adl, The Just, and therefore rewards and punishes according to what each person has earned. One cannot compare His love, mercy, wrath, sight, or any other characteristic to that of anyone or anything else. All of the attributes of humankind are created; the attributes of God are not created, but have always existed and are eternal.
One of the earliest revelations to Prophet Muhammad reads: "Say: He is Allah, the One, Allah, the Self-Sufficient Master upon Whom all depend, He begets not, nor is He begotten, and there is none who is comparable unto Him." [112: 1-4].
Another beautiful verse, known as 'The Verse of the Kursi/Footstool,' shows more of His attributes: "Allah! None has the right to be worshipped except He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursi/footstool extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great." [2:255].

If it is true this is not Islamic. In Malaysia our women must wear specially tailored prayers attire called "telekung". Usually in white it covers whole body except face and the palms.

Assalamu Aleikom
At first when I read your comment I thought you must not be serious because Surely a born Muslim must know the many trials and tribulations a person goes through when converting?! Surely a born Muslim must know that a convert is not always correct in many things when just learning Islam and need to be gently guided in most areas...and for you to leave such a comment about whomever it is in the video not being serious or real just seems like a joke to me.
I pray that you were not serious or meant to express something different and it came out wrong.
If you were in fact serious in your comment then I ask you dear Brother/Sister, please take a step back and think about your words. None of us are in a position to say if someone is serious or not about Islam and converting.
Converts need guidance and when they first start to learn Islam, they don't always do things properly. That is why it is up to us, Born Muslims and other converts, to gently teach them the proper way. I know of women who converted and at first didn't cover their hair...I did not scold them when I found this out, I did not say to myself-or them- that they must not be serious or are making a joke of Islam...instead I brought it up to them in a kind, respectful manner so as to NOT sound like I am pointing out their faults. I also know of a couple who upon converting wore shorts and a t-shirt while struggling through the fatihah Masha'Allah. I didn't say anything because they were telling me what they did after first converting. Of course they no longer do this because NOW they KNOW. They were guided by a very good Brother from Pakistan who was very patient with them. This Brother did not tell them they must wear Shalwar Kameez because that is how they dress in Pakistan, instead he just explained the manner in which was proper according to Sunnah.
So you see? By you immediately thinking the worst and immediately insulting the way they dress and even referring to how they dress in your home country, is very shocking to me and I would imagine to any NEW convert who comes here seeking answers and stumbles upon this video and your comment.
Converts have it very hard and we look up to those of you who are born Muslim. So please next time try to think about how you may sound when letting others know your opinion.
I beg you for forgiveness if I have hurt your feelings or caused you to become angry in my response to you...it is not my intention.

[QUOTE=mkrahman;465]Hi everyone! Big Salam to all!
When I did this video I was was a muslim for about 5 months. They started filming in August 2003 and again another shoot in October 2003. I converted to islam in June 2003. I just started to desire to cover then in public in October. So when they filmed me in the first rounds, I was not covered. So please forgive me for that.
Sister, welcome to Islam. Always strive to do it right the first, the Islamic way. Salam.

Dear Zainsmommy, in no way you have hurt me..what you said all facts and I accept your criticism. Fyi, I'm a convert too. I've no intention to insult another convert because it is like insulting me and my wife who is also a convert. What I was asking is the video authentic? If yes, I would like to record my dissatisfaction to the one who guided these women into Islam for not teaching the right thing at the first time. You see, it is ok if one who just reverted to Islam did not cover her self, my wife was not for 2 years. At least, during prayers she did wear the proper attire from day 1 because our teachers showed us the way forward the Islamic way. Whatever it is, I still stand by my view that moslem men and women must wear a proper attire in prayers regardless they are new or not to Islam. I do daawa in my country where possible, surely I will not use this type of video to our women here because it may send a wrong message particularly on dresscode. Pls forgive me if my comment hurt the feelings of our sisters out there. I've no intention to insult my sisters I hope you respect my view. The rest is up to you.

Assalamu Aleikom Dear Brother,
My apologies to you. I misunderstood your point and now that you have explained, I am in agreement with you. I understand what you mean.
Thank you for not being offended, I was worried that perhaps my words would come across as insulting.
So you are a convert as well as your wife? Masha'Allah! This is great news!
Please do keep up your good work in giving Dawa (the correct way) as this Ummah can use more good people such as yourself and your wife.
May Allah subhana wa taala bless you for your efforts and also for your understanding, forgiving, and kind nature -which you have expressed in your response to me. It is not often someone can look at things with an open mind instead of becoming very defensive. I appreciate this. I too can learn from it. It seems I should have followed my own advice here and chosen different words. (I was offended at first when I read your original comment :girl3: )

SALAM Belkacem
Sincerely,
Katherine

What are some of the software applications used in accounting? What software is used? And how is it relevant to the field of accounting? Is it used in accounts payable? Receivable? Payroll? Taxes? The most common programs would help. If you can list 3 or more it would be a plus.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
i just wanted to emphasize on something very important. As muslims, we are not supposed to use the word Convert when speaking about a person who embrasses islam. Because, and according to what the prophet Mohammed May Peace and Mercy of Allah be upon Him said, all human kind are born muslim and then it's the parents who turn them to other religions or beliefs. Therefore, we should all use the word Revert instead, which means returning to a former belief, Islam.

:salam2:
:ma:& praise to GOD
if every MUSLIM in this world study QURAN carefully like what you did, they will appreciate GOD more in becoming a MUSLIM
God did mention he made the QURAN easy to learn SURA 54 VERSE 17,22,32 and 40 said it and even GOD challenged us to stdy the QURAN where we will find all the answers there.SURA 47 VERSE 24, GOD also asked us to sutdy the QURAN since the QURAN is a guidance and mercy from GOD for our salvation.
They are many more verses that GOD mentioned that the QURAN is complete and fully detailed.
I believe if one can master the QURAN he/she will be a strong and righteous MUSLIM.
The problem with MAJORITY of the MUSLIM now is because they ignore the QURAN and divided themselves into sects and rely on man made books rather than the scripture (QURAN).
Hope we can meet one day to discuss and share with each other.
TQ AND GOD BLESS

Praise To God,
For the majority to know and understand what is ISLAM all about, read the QURAN page by page in the language we can understand since GOD owns all the languages, understanding the message is more important than memorizing the QURAN.
God had made the QURAN easy for anyone tom learn and know what is ISLAM is all about and the answers are all there.
Refer to SURA 54 (MOON) VERSE 17,22,32,40 and also SURA 47 (MOHAMAD) VERSE 24 where GOD mentioned QURAN is easy to learn for those who is sincere and possess intelligent.
We will keep in tocuh and GOD BLESS US ALL

It is interesting reading from fellow muslims all over the world.I feel so happy to read somy thing about many people are now reverting to Islam, though it is not strange because it has been predicted that many people will join the Muslim Ummah in differnt groups and more in large numbers.
The islamic light is eternal and divine.Everything happens according to the dictates of ALLAH because HE decides all matter.
I pray for all muslims and wish all Allah's RAHAMA in all our present and future endevours.

here is an intresting fact about recent converts to islam
Using a number of sources, including a survey of more than 250 British mosques, census data from 2001 and conversion figures in Europe, the researchers estimate that there could be as many as 100,000 converts - of all ethnic backgrounds - in the UK. This represents an increase on an estimated 60,000 converts in 2001.
its always nice to watch a inspiring video of a muslim friend amy all guide them and elevate them in the true meaning of islam and to read quran (http://www.readquranonline.net) reading quran online (http://www.learningquranonline.com) wile listen to quran online (http://www.read-quranonline.com)
For an insight into the experiences of Muslim converts, the researchers spoke to 120 - mainly young, white women.
